There's me thinking that automatics were invented for people unable to master the art of gear changes and clutch control ;).

I guess it passed you by then, if that's what you really think.

I much prefer automatic vehicles, because they just glide and give a much smoother ride than manuals. What puts me off buyimg one is the fear of slipping and sliding in icy conditions - have had quite a few near-miss experiences in poor road conditions :(.

It might well be your expectations. I had a V8 SD1, auto. It was fine on ice, so long as you drove it correctly. Normally left foot braking, to release the power slowly, with enough throttle on the right foot to have started it moving.

    Many thanks,
It is a Toyota, semi automatic, it runs fine. i felt it jerking when in 1st gear start/stop. has just been serviced. So roll back a little is normal.
I will check the oil level.

Never driven one but I believe those kind of boxes are a bit jerky, and not being a torque converter roll back is normal. I'd still check the oil though (but should have been checked at service).

I own both (conventional) auto and manual cars and have done for many years. I have never noticed any difference in tendency to slip and slide in icy conditions. If you want a smoother ride, get a car with an old school torque converter auto. The currently fashionable dual clutch variety are jerky in comparison. At least, all the ones I have driven are.

I have this problem too in my Audi A1, and I don't use stop start because the car seems to 'lurch' when the engine cuts back in......but I can't stop the rolling back issue :(

I drive my Hubbys Lexus regulary and it doesn't roll back.....in fact I have driven loads of different auto's and the only other one I had a problem with 'rolling back' was a Mercedes E class.

"It is a Toyota, semi automatic,"
By that I'm assuming it's an MMT? If so, I've had one, in "M" or "E" it should creep forward on level ground and very slight inclines but on a steeper hill will not "creep". You should treat as a manual clutch 'box for a hill start, hold with handbrake and increase engine revs to engage the clutch further then release the h/brake.

The problem is the gearbox in question is not an automatic, it is a manual gearbox that operates the normal clutch and throttle and changes the gear for you....exactly the same as if you had a mate pressing the clutch pedal for you and about as much use.

If you buy an automatic car it will behave as you require, but in the size and class of car you have automatic gearboxes are rare indeed, usually this market is covered by the Korean makers.

There will be a dipstick for the automatic gearbox.
Most modern Mercs don't,but you can fit an after market one.
