When did you last check the oil level? There will be a dipstick for the automatic gearbox. Check the level with the engine running and when warm.

Why? French cars all put the gearboxes in backwards or something? Can you sue them?

To be serious, what car is it, what year, and is it a true automatic, or a modern semi?

No it is not - it's natural tendency should be to climb the hill, if anything.

Depends entirely on the car. Mine rolls back when gravity overcomes the torque converter at idle.

Auto means nothing without a car make. Torque converter, CVT, DSG, powershift, MMT are just a few 'auto boxes', some roll back, some don't.

    Many thanks,
It is a Toyota, semi automatic, it runs fine. i felt it jerking when in 1st gear start/stop. has just been serviced. So roll back a little is normal.
I will check the oil level.

There's me thinking that automatics were invented for people unable to master the art of gear changes and clutch control ;).
