Hi there,
Wondering if anyone could help me.
My partner and I recently got married and i just don't know where to begin with changing our names.
We both want to put our surnames together e.g my surname - his surname.
On asking our vicar he said he pursumed we just start singing things with our surnames together. But i am not sure.
Anyone know what i should do?
Many thanks:)

I'm trying to find the official website for deed poll but a lot of them look a bit fishy.
Does anyone know the trusted site as they seem to be way to many!
Many thanks0 -
You will both have to change your names by deed poll.
It's simple to do. The online ones are generally fine. There is no "official" deed poll service, but there is one that the UK passport service recommend (which also happens to be the most expensive - a cheaper one will do you fine). Basically, it just needs to be a correctly phrased document that is signed and independently witnessed (a friend or work colleague can witness them for you).
Then you use this to get your passports changed, and then get everything else changed after that.0 -
I added my husband's name onto my surname so have a double barrelled name after I got married and just wrote to inform everyone that I was married and what my new surname was. For my passport I had to enclose my marriage certificate and some orgainisations such as our mortage lender, bank, credit cards, asked for a copy of the marriage cert to be sent to them after I had written to them, but many such as utilities just changed it to my new surname (and kept my husband's name as the same). Like your vicar said in my case I just started signing things in my new name.0

There is no need to change names by deed poll, for a passport, it is just a matter of sending in your marriage certificate with the passport office forms and fee. Information on offical link below.

No you don't, you can call yourself anything you like without any official change (as long as the purpose isn't to defraud) so yes, just start using it!0 -
There is no need to do anything official, your marriage certificate records both names and that is the only evidence you will ever be asked for. Just start signing the way you want to.0

You can use either name, or both, or anything else come to that. You don't need to use deed poll for it.0

Weve double barrelled our names and we havent used a deedpoll.
I simply showed our wedding certificate to our bank for main account.
For credit cards...err havent quite got round to it yet for all of them lol, but most of the companies Ive looked at say on their websites to ring up, or will need a copy of the certificate sent in.
Weve both changed our driving licenses, we just sent them a copy of our wedding certificate.
For NI no. and PAYE stuff, theres a form you can fill in on the government website to say youve changed your name and to ask them to update it against your NI no.. You do this online and dont need to send in anything.
I ordered about 5 copies of our certificate just incase anyone I send them to looses them.0 -
Could somebody tell me why you want to double barrel your name.
I can understand you wanting (female) to keep your single name.
Would you expect your husband to do this also or would be still be Mr xx and you would be mrs xx yy.
Genuine question,
My own opinion in the past has been that it has been a bit pretentious and people trying to put out that they are something that they are not but Im quite happy to have my mind changed.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

If my partner and I married, I think she'd double-barrel, having mentioned it in the past.
Her reasoning is that in her very small family, there's literally no males (none that are procreating, anyway) to carry on her family name. But another part of her 'wants' my name, too.0
