PNC only shows a marker against vehicles where tax is 3 months or more out of date - it doesn't show anything at all against most vehicles (unless it's been changed recently).

So if you're stopped by the police with an expired disc, they can't check online whether it's been renewed or not. They will complete a short report to DVLA, check all your other documents and probably have a pretty good look at the car for defects as well, all of which whilst you wait, so it's best to avoid the hassle and just put the new disc in, if you have it.
