Anyone tried "Stoveheat" fuel?

Sadly, my friendly and helpful coal merchant has retired, so I'm left with no choice but to use one of the 'big two' firms in my area. Both are offering CPL's "Stoveheat" smokeless fuel, which I've never used.

I want to order next winter's solid fuel now and this is at a reasonable price compared with my usual Taybrite/Newflame or Maxibrite options, but don't want to order the wrong stuff in serious quantity.

Has any forum reader ever tried Stoveheat? If so, what's it like and how does it compare? I'll be using it on a multifuel stove.

  • You have my sympathies. My local independent is way cheaper than CPL etc (he was charging £8.00 for a 25kg pre-pack bag of generic smokless ovals last winter). Having seen some of the prices CPL are quoting, I'd hate to see my indie cease trading.

I've never used Stoveheat, but as it's billed as an economy alternative to premium anthracite, my guess would be that it might be harder to light/get going than Taybrite etc. However, that's just conjecture on my part, so don't let that sway you. Probably best to listen to someone who's actually used it!

    Thanks for the comments.

In the end (I had to place an order by the end of June to get a 'summer' discount - my independent used to run his summer prices through till the Autumn!) so I decided to play safe and stick with the devil I knew, so bought Maxibrite with a few bags of Stoveheat to see how it compares.
