Car reversed in to by neighbour

Debt-free and Proud!
Neighbour knocked on my door and said he accidently reversed in to my car when his foot slipped off the clutch (was raining round here). No problem, these things happen, so I got his insurance details and gave them a ring.

Their insurance said they'll write to him on Monday.

My car is probably drivable, visually its the corner of the rear drivers side bumper thats taken a damn good whack (goes in a good few inches, and hanging part off) and possibly part of the rear wing. I'd guess near £1000 of damage if replacing bumper and wing. Can't tell if its done anything else to the car, like chassis or suspension (toyota IQ so everything crammed in to a small space) but whats the process from here? Do I have to wait for his insurance to contact me about getting a repair at one of their approved garages?

I've been using the wife's MR2 for work, as we have a 4 month old and the airbag can't be turned off she'll be stuck without a car. We'll be going on holiday in 3 weeks so will try and get it repaired while I'm away if possible, but if they do it before would I be able to claim a hire car for the wife or is it tough and she'll have to get a bus/taxi? We get on well with neighbours, and he was very apologetic, he caught me in a good mood too, so don't want to bump his claim up any more than it needs to, I just want to make sure my wife and baby can get somewhere in an emergency fast if needing to.

I'd be getting his insurance to sort out your repair and provide you with a suitable hire car whilst it's being repaired. You can have it repaired anywhere you wish.

Contact his insurer again tomorrow to speed up the process, there's no reason why your neighbour can't speak to them directly rather than wait for letters to be sent out. Also tell them that the car is not driveable so you'll be needing a loan car asap otherwise they'll probably take their time. If they don't play ball then just tell them you'll put the claim in the hands of an accident management company.

You will have to inform your own insurer for "information only".

When I had my stationary car hit by a neighbour reversing down the street she gave me her details. I contacted my own insurance who organised a body shop and also hire car. I did get pestered by a claim company as well so either it was insurance company, hire car company or bodyshop who sold my details on, I didnt go that route. The insurance said we they can recover money from there insurance it wont go on my record as a fault. I got car back within a week £700 of damage including hire car from drivers wing and drivers door only slight damage but still cost a lot.

What a curiously unhelpful post with a bizarre need to comment on.

It took all of a few seconds to read!:(
  • post number 3 is useless, OP, speed things up by calling the insurer and asking them to hurry along with getting you out a hire car.

Dont do this, call your insurance company by all means but tell them it is for Information Only.

The third party will sort a hire car out for you.

If you involve your company in it you will be paying excess out and then claiming it back, it is just so messy.

The first answer was excellent advice and you should follow that. Been there, done that twice and everything was sorted within 10 days.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

If you find 280 words too much to read, you're in for a big shock if you ever decide to read a book :rotfl:

You don't have to use your neighbours insurance company approved repairer. Pick who you want to do the repairs and inform his insurance company that your car will be going there. They won't argue in my experience.

I had similar in december. other parties repairer was a back street bodyshop who reckoned the job would cost under £1k. Car was a Jaguar XK needing new wing, wheel arch liner, bumper repaired, wheel refurbed and new side indicator. I refused to use their repairer and they agreed to use my preferred repairer. Cost was over £3k.
