Used Car Issues

Hello

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I purchased a used car from a main dealer around 2 months ago and it didn't come with a warranty. I wasn't too fussed about this, as I understood that I was covered by the sales of goods act. This car was just shy of £5000. I have been to another dealership today to have it serviced to find that there is about £1000 worth of "urgent advisories" that need to be looked at. I have been told that due to the small amount of miles I have done in the car, the problems were there before I purchased the vehicle. I paid for the car 80% by Debit Card (Loan) and 20% by Credit Card.

Where do I actually stand if the dealer refuses to fix the issues?

Thank you in advance.

    What are the issues?

Can you be sure that other dealership haven't overstated them in their own financial interests?

I can't imagine a £5000 car genuinely needing £1000 worth of 'advisory' work without it feeling like the wheels are about to fall off!

Would also help to know make & model etc.
  • Thanks for the reply.

    It's a Peugeot 207.

    I have been advised that:-

    • The rear brakes (discs and pads) need replacing.
    • A tyre needs replacing.
    • The exhaust needs replacing as 2 brackets (front and back) have failed and Peugeot only sell it as a whole unit.
    • The "Air Box" is broken
    • The Wipers (front and rear) need replacing.
    • The ANC (no idea what this is) Belt needs replacing.

You say "another dealership" you don't mean somewhere like Kwik-Fit do you?

The rear discs if needed can be had for less than £60 each for a decent brand.

    Pads £20

    Wipers £20

    Exhaust O ring clamp here for £9 for a 1.6 207http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Peugeot_207_1.6_2007/p/car-parts/car-body-parts-and-car-exhaust/exhausts/exhaust-gasket-and-exhaust-clamp/?712540221&1&ea04fac53c1dd3f5b1e8abac076639e7e6038fb2&000543

And the belt is just the ancillory belt. Anc is short. That shouldn't be a lot.

In summary - second opinion needed!!!

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

    • The rear brakes (discs and pads) need replacing. - Maximum 2 hours labour and about £60 for parts.
    • A tyre needs replacing. - £60-£100 depending on size
    • The exhaust needs replacing as 2 brackets (front and back) have failed and Peugeot only sell it as a whole unit. -Sounds very dubious, may be worth asking GSF/Andrew Page or similar suppliers as to availability.
    • The "Air Box" is broken - Cracks are common, visible & glue easily. Alternatively scrap yards will have them. New parts WILL be direct from Peugeot and the price will be rediculous.
    • The Wipers (front and rear) need replacing. -£4 each in your supermarket. 30 seconds labour.
    • The ANC (no idea what this is) Belt needs replacing. -Ancilliary belt. £20ish, but may just need tensioning and very easy to inspect. Max 1 hour labour to change, 15min to tension.

The above 'labour' items can all be easily done by a beginner home mechanic with a Haynes manual and a few spanners.

    Thanks for the reply.

No the other dealer was another Peugeot dealer. I have a written quote from them, so they must have the worlds highest labour charges!

    Prices (Fitted):

    Tyre: £65.71
    Exhaust: £519.99
    Brake pads (unquoted)
    Brake disks: £275
    Front and Rear Wipers: £42.99
    ANC Belt: £79.99
    "Air Box": Unquoted.

This is my first car, so I am a complete newb at all this. I'm glad I posted here and found that the parts aren't as expensive as I was told. I'll sleep better tonight.

    Thanks for the info.

If you can't do any of the work yourself, take it to a local independent garage and get a second opinion.
  • Thanks for that. I will see what the dealership comes back with, but I will also pop to a few independents tomorrow to see what they say.

I would really suggest going somewhere else! The Peugeot official website states it costs £275 for rear brake disc and pad replacement.

You should expect to pay about half that at an independent garage.

The exhaust will also be available a lot cheaper than that. If it's just the backbox that needs changing Mr Clutch looks like it'd be around £75 (though yours isn't specifically mentioned)

    John 11:35!
  • Thanks again for all the help. If the original Peugeot refuse to fix it at their expense, I have a friend who has said that he will do all the repairs for the cost of the parts (at trade price) plus a pint. Then I'll go after the dealer through the SMC.

    Thanks again everyone.
