I went to Sulmona and had no problems but dodging the streetkids in Pescara was no joy.

There are some interesting places like Tende out beyond Nice as well as in the city.

I flew to Pisa for Florence - very easy. Got a coach between the two rather than the train.

As said, definitely don't bother staying in Pisa. Skanky high street is the only way to describe it. So glad I went though, absolutely amazing seeing the Leaning Tower - didn't think it'd particularly impress me but I loved my trip there. A few market stalls and little shops nearby, but really not much else around.

Definitely worth a day trip/flight via Pisa if going to Florence.

I think you said you've been to Prague. Even if you have, did you walk down the back of the castle? Some amazing buildings and places to visit, and gardens, or get a train out to Kutna Hora (see the 'bone church')... Just adore Prague - my favourite place in the world. Have walked for miles there.

Could always do Italian lakes for a relaxing break... could get separate flights and find a central hotel.
