Who doesn't have a stock cupboard

Having 3 dogs I keep a supply of pets medical supplies in which I buy from on-line vet suppliers and other places and pay far far less and always have to hand things to deal with minor emergencies that previously I would be going to vets for and paying a fortune - like blue bandage to hold a dressing in place vet charges £10.50 yet I can buy them at 99p store.
So if one is needed and wound does need to be seen by vet I take my own along, at first vet was not to happy but explained I need to keep my costs down but do not want health of my pets to suffer so now he accepts I am just the odd dog lady - I have even taken in my own Tamodine and dressings ( lint) if say they needed a stitch ( twice that has happened in 14 years) and by using mine my bill is far, far less as only paying for their time not supplies apart from stitches, but as they are needed for emergencies they do have to be in my stock cupboard.
I did always have insurance for them but as our income went down and the insurance went up as they got older ( 2 are 14 1/2 and other one will be 14 at end of October) I have to find a way of ensuring I could afford to have any medical problems dealt with. Thankfully they are fairly healthy with just my boy with some arthritis which gives him pain from time to time that you can really see so I buy his pain med from the on-line places as you do not need a prescription for it but vet will only give it when you take them and only a few weeks supply at a time ( its paracetamol and codeine), only give it to him on bad days, usually devils claw is enough to keep him pain free. To me having it in is just like having Calpol and Ibuprofen for children, you hopefully will not need it but it there in case you do.
Remember also to try to build up bit of a stock of any prescription meds your family need as well as your pets, not easy I know but even a weeks supply extra can help in bad weather conditions or as someone on the thread mentioned about the riots last year and how all the shops by them closed and it was to frightening to go out to buy anything. Nat West/RBS/Ulster Bank disaster other week left many people with no cash to buy food and if they or pets needed a repeat prescription they would not have had the money to pay for them either if their cards were all tied up with the bank. The news made a big thing about peoples bills not being paid or not being able to buy food but I wonder how many couldn't pay for a repeat prescription.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

I don't have the room to store excessive amounts of tinned goods I have no interest in eating 'just in case' something happens. In this country we're highly unlikely to get into a situation where we have to rely on food from our cupboards because it's impossible to get any outside.
I am wondering if you've misunderstood the intent of storecupboards? iyou seem to have your own version imo!
ts just a case of stocking up a little bit to keep you going should things get difficult and having enough put by so you feel comfortable.
however freezer stores will only last a couple of days without power and food from outside the home is only accessible if you have money to hand and if it's there in the shops.
a store cupboard doesnt need to be 'excessive amounts' of tinned goods, just a few extra bits to keep you going should the need arise and if you cook everything from scratch anyway I would imagine you have the makings of a store cupboard anyway.
for example you say you have rice and pasta - so do I thats part of my storecupboard - but I also have some dog and cat food (not for me!), tinned toms and flavourings too. along with longlife milk and some tinned beans (baked, kidney, butter, mixed), porridge oats, dried fruit and brown sugar so that should I be unable to leave the house for whatever reason we'd be ok in the house for a little while and could have a few warm meals cooked on our camping stove if power supplies went out rather than reheating on the hob or in the microwave. I've also got enough of my essential medication to last me about 2 months. all of these are things I use anyway and I just rotate when we buy more ie when I use some or when some is on an offer too good to miss.
its just about being prepared for any form of SHTF  (we need an icon/smilie for that) whatever that may be: extra vistiros for dinner, plague, weather freakage, power outs, job loss, change of circumstance, loss of benefits, losing your wallet. no money available, becoming housebound, armageddon, zombie takeover or the banks collapsing (I am sure there are more :rotfl:)
I need to stockpile more guinness I think :TBlah0 -

i hear green lipped mussel extract is good for join pain in animals?
your post has made me think about getting some supplies in for my dog and cats other than their food, thank you! :ABlah0 -
I normally have:
Tin tomatoes / Sardines / Tuna (maybe soup too)
Flour / Pasta / Breakfast cereals in varying proportions (have 6 on the go!)
Frozen veg, chips, bread, meat
Herbs
Uht Milk, Teas, Coffees
So I guess I could limp on a few days if I couldn't get out or get any shopping sent in!
I prefer fresh food so my fridge looks devastated by day 4 or 5!!!!
p.s. meow is ok as I have 25+ boxes of Whiskas pouches and a bag of Whiskas biscuits.0 -

that's what i've been telling my daughter about, she recently sussed out some people were worried about the mayan 2012 thing and i told her how nuts people went about the millenium bug
having a food store for me is a food savings account which i have had to live off more than once in my life and has helped keep friends and family afloat over the years as well. it paid off well for example when toilet paper kept rising so steeply. i had purchased 10 packs with 10 rolls each and within 3 months each pack had risen to and thankfully now stayed at 60p more per pack so that's £6 i saved right there for something i know we'll use, never want to be caught short of and have the room to store
we lived hand to mouth as a kid, so yes it's a security blanket of sorts but as i said it's been fallen back on many times not just by me. besides, i only buy what i can really save on, i go 'shopping in my stores' regularly so rotation isn't a problem and the more you save by purchasing in advance when prices are rock bottom the cheaper groceries get overall in the long run.
doesn't work for everyone but for anyone considering it i'd recommend it, just for money savings if nothing else0 -
we stocked up on tuna a while ago - no idea how long ago tbh but more than a year ago, and I noticed the price of tuna recently as we are now down to 3 tins so thought we ought to think about getting some more in - when did the price shoot up?! its ridiculously high at the moment! thankfully tinned toms seem to be coming down a bit in price but sheesh! tuna is silly price!Blah0

i noticed that too, it used to be cheap at places like lidl but even there you can't touch it for less than 50p a tin if that i have about a dozen cans left from when i got off of approved foods.
i like tuna as it's a quick to add protein source, particularly good if you have to use a camp stove due to powercuts but i refuse to pay more than 50p/tin so when i do see it at that price or lower i buy a large stock of it.0 -
If you have a B&M near you they ( well up to a few weeks ago) were doing a pack of three tins of tuna for 99p - just checked, Ocean Bay Tuna Flakes in brine, 170g net weight and cans are blue.....I have about 3 packs - 9 tins in stock cupboard. One thing I have noticed very often what B&M have AF have, have often wondered if they are linked in some way, so I have never as yet bought from AF as I see what they have on offer toddle off to B&M and nearly always will find the exact same offer there and as I have two not far ( have a big super dooper one that opened earlier this year about two miles away, smaller on a mile away in opposite direction) its not worth me paying for delivery from AF as petrol costs are less.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

There are some offers on Tuna at present if they are still on in Tesco's(half price for four tins) but it might be Tuna Chunks this time rather than steak. Tesco's have some of their own Tuna fillets for £1 a tin too..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
