I have, in my time, sold two cars back to the original supplying dealer. One a Land Rover Discovery and the second a BMW 3 series. Both went back to the main agents I bought them from who were quite willing to buy back at the highest trade price I had been offered in P/X. That gave me cash and no p/x to negotiate my next car. Also both dealers were willing to wait for my car.
I must say both of these cars were in immaculate condition, low mileage, full history and under 3yrs old.

To be honest I'd assumed I'd get the bum's rush from a dealer if I was simply selling the car to them with no purchase. I wonder... I might try that.

Done it a couple of time and got OK price. Works out well if you have something a bit specific. I did it with a Rover Coupe - sold it to a rover specialist who was more than happy to give me top price for it, but other garages were not reall interested.

Another alternative is http://www.sure-sell.info/ its like a normal car auction, but make it easier for joe public to enter stuff. Think you can set a reserve price, and if the car dosent reach it then you just take it back home.

Both times I sold to main agent I was buying a car from a different manufacturer ie. Land Rover sold to main dealer in Huddersfield, bought Honda from Wakefield. Bmw sold to main dealer in Wakefield bought Toyota in Bridlington.
If you have a nice car it's worth ringing round dealers, although there was no credit crunch when I sold mine.

  • Just sold a car on Friday through sellyourjamjarco.uk What Car guide price was £16,800 jamjar co paid £16,100 have to say the service was excellent gave them a description of the car and any damage and on inspection they agreed and didn't try to haggle or invent any reasons to lower the price. Money in the bank within the hour and paid exactly what they said. Much easier than trying to sell private with lots of time wasters would use again.0n a px deler only offered 15000

I tried to trade up at a dealer for another newer car, and was offered £2850. Before I commited to the deal I thought I'd try to sell independently. I was in a hurry so didn't have time to try privately, so tried webuyanycar.com. I was given a value of £3850 on the website. Next stage was to take it to them to 'collect the cheque' . When I got there they would only offer me £2500, so not impressed. Some people on internet forums were suggesting wewillbuyyouycar.com because they had good results. I was dubious this time, but as they were going to come to me, I felt I had little to lose. I went on their website and was given a value of £3489. A few minutes later the owner phoned me and we discussed a few things, he said if I had described the car accurately he would keep to his offer. His rep arrived a couple of days later, spent about half an hour going over it, then agreed to give me the full value. The money was CHAPSed into my account, and was confirmed by my bank within 20 minutes. We filled in the V5 etc and he drove away in my ex-car. I recommend them. :j

Sold car to trade for close to asking price (only £30 less than I was wanting). However I kept the outstanding tax disc and refund should be around £80.

Tried a few of the we buy cars sites. Wewillbuyyourcar.com made best offer.

I accepted the offer on a thursday and they came out following wednesday did a full appriasal on the car and even though it had a slight scuff on an alloy wheel that I didn't notice they paid the full agreed price. Money was transfered into my account by chaps payment (guaranted cleared funds once in your account) within the hour and then I let driver take car away. All quite civilised really.

Have a reference number anyone can use: 171466207
If anyone sells their car to them, they (and me) get additional £25 M&S voucher.
