Our DD once had a house where the previous owners had put the boiler in the loft. Worked well, took up no useful space and no noise in the house.

We once put a gas boiler in the loft, no problem there. The location was suggested by the plumber, a friend, who lived in the house opposite and had put his boiler in the loft. Just had to remember to go up once a year and check the levels ( or something like that OH did it).

We've also had boilers in the utility room, which was good as it was where the cats slept so they kept warm in the winter. Our current boiler is in the kitchen but wall mounted and boxed in so you can't see it.

When we extended we sited the boiler in the garage. It's bl00dy nuisance in the winter when it goes on and off in the night with the frost protection system as the sound travels up to our bedroom above and wakes me. We have to move out of that bedroom into another in the winter months. We never had this problem previously with the old boiler which was in the kitchen below the bathroom.

  • Also consider that so as to comply to current regulations a boier in the loft must be easily accessible, have permanently boarded access, lighting and a loft ladder in place. As well as having to run the gas there, the boiler will need a cold water supply, the supply of hot water from the boiler from the boiler will need connecting into the houses existing system, and where the current boiler is will need the pipe work reconnecting. The new location will then need a point to run the condensate out of the boiler to a drain, usually but not always externally. This can be run into the bath waste fr example, although a pump could be needed.

Moving a boiler sounds an easy job, but it often isn't. There could be a lot of labour involved, which as there is no profit from supplying the boiler, you may find sounds high. Plus there is also all the copper (or if not cheaper plastic push fit) pipes to include too.

And make sure anyone doing the job is Gas Safe registered.

BTW, it is not uncommon to fit boilers in bedrooms. Often when going from a conventional system to a combi, the preferred location is often where the hot water cylinder used to be. This may have been the bedroom.

However, personally, I wouldn't be happy having a boiler in a bedroom. Not sure I would in a loft either.

Our central heating was upgraded a couple of years ago. Our loft was deemed suitable for the new boiler so that is where it was sited. We have a pressure guage in our upstairs cupboard so we don't have to worry about checking levels in the loft. Can't give advise on cost of moving but would say it would be better to move from bedroom if at all possible.

    I understand ur point.
trying to understand a approx range..just to be sure, haven't underestimated the job ..
the house is in a good condition & this combi boiler was fitted just 7-8 mnths ago.

Cost determined by site requirements and materials. Get 3 quotes from RGIs recommended to you by a source you trust, compare like for like. We try to avoid fitting a boiler in a bedroom ...some boilers can be very noisy.;)
