Barclaycard Nuisance Calls

Options
My OH spoke to barclaycard on weds after missing a payment last month to his barclaycard. He spoke to them and arranged payment and was also given a refund of £24 for the charges as it had been barclaycard who had messed up the payment.

Since weds he has been having 4 calls a day to both his home and his mobile which he was going to sort out tomorrow but he had a phone call this am from his previous employer as they had also been receiving 4 phone calls a day for him from a recorded message (he left about 12 months ago and forgot to remove it).

He spoke to someone from barclaycard who said he could only apologise for the error and removed his works number from his contact details. He has been given an address to complain to but, really, what are the chances of them doing any more than saying sorry. The person he spoke to at barclaycard said 'I've remove our number, what more do you want me to do?!' surely this constitutes harassment particularly as he spoke to them and arranged payment on weds (he was going to pay next thurs but even though this was okayed when he spoke to them on weds, the guy today said that it's ok but the phone calls would continue until the debt is paid off). He paid the money today which has left him with no money until he gets paid next week just to stop the calls to his home and former work place.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He didn't pay last month due to an error of Barclaycard. So, the money should still be in his account. That would not leave him short until next pay-day.

Did you fail to mention he spent the dosh on something else?

No, I didn't forget to mention it. He hadn't noticed it hadn't left his account, Barclays accepted that and said it was fine and made an arrangement for a payment. Surely if they agree a payment then they should not be bombarding someone with 12 phone calls a day to his home, work and mobile.

They've done him a favour really, because he now has two key learning points from this issue...

    1. The importance of keeping contact details up to date (for all his other accounts), and

    2. The importance of checking bank statements and/or online transaction lists regularly, and reconciling them with anticipated/expected/committed spend.

You say he was getting calls on Weds. You also said he paid on Weds. Then you say he paid today. When DID he pay ? If he paid today and not on Weds, then Barclays would have called him on Weds for payment, it's not Barclays fault he didn't bother to remove his old work number.

No, they phoned him Wednesday and they apologised for messing up the direct debit and refunded him the late payment charges. He then arranged to pay them next week. THEN yesterday and today the automated system was phoning him constantly to say he owe them money and the customer service guy said the only way to stop the automated calls was to pay so he paid today.

Repeated phone calls to your home, workplace or anywhere else which you have placed on your file as a means of contact is harassment ... but only after you have told them in writing to stop doing it!

But I have to say that sorting out the phone calls "tomorrow" doesn't cut it. They have to be sorted out the same day if it's a working day or on the next working day.

    .......so he paid today.

So, your husband paid last month's payment today, some 22 (or more) days late.
Hopefully he won't forget this month's payment, which must be due any day now.

I've no experience of this but I don't see how phoning somebody several times a day asking them to pay will make them pay any faster if they don't have the money.

So the automated system was working as it should, requesting an overdue payment. I wouldn't say this was harrassment.
  • So to all the people who are saying about the late payment......

If you had a payment that was late for whatever reason and phoned the company you owe the money to and arranged a payment date which they agreed would you then be happy if they continually phoned you AFTER THE PAYMENT HAD BEEN AGREED. No one is complaining coz they phoned and asked for the money, the problem comes when they consistently phone eek though a new payment date has been agreed!
