Hi. We have saved through the £2012 in 2012 challenge for a hol in sorrento in oct. it's a big special hol. We have sc apartment and flights, so now thinking of how to make the most of it.
We are planning to use the local train to visit Naples pompeii and the volcano.
Any other tips?
Is it worth a trip to an island?
What will the weather be like?
Wish I'd seen the tip about flying from Scotland due to different school hols- never mind
Any ideas great fully received

Sorrento and the surrounding area is a great place to go. I'd definitely do Capri at least once. In particular, the coastal walk from Faro to the Blue Grotto is wonderful. Also, if you have a car, you could drive the Amalfi coast and up to Ravello for superb views and even on to Paestum if you like Greek temples. I'm not sure if you can use the train to walk up Vesuvius. We had a car and drove up to just below the top, but you could almost certainly get a bus up there. The view from the top across the Bay of Naples to Capri and around is again marvellous.0

Take an umbrella. You might get good weather, but there's also plenty of rain in autumn and when it rains in Sorrento it rains hard.0

Did a really long post and it disappeared..:(
Sorrento is a great place to just walk around.
If you fancy Pompeii then Herculaneum is another place to visit. Better preserved than Pompeii. A few stops further along the same train line so both are very do-able in a long day
Vesuvius involves the train to the station then a bus or taxi to the top
There is a cable car a few stops along the line whci takes you to the top of the mountains with a great view of Vesuvius and the harbour
A bus ride to Amalfi is another trip
Day trip to Capri is a must. Fast boat from the dock at Sorrento (very easy walk down but much harder back up although there is a blue bus which costs one euro each way)
Don't waste too much time around the harbour on Capri. Get the bus or funicular to the top where the shops etc are. I wouldn't bother with a taxi unless you want the experience of an open top car ride.
Bus to Anacapri as it's a lot less 'blingy' and you can get the chairlift to the monestary on top and the views are to die for
You can get a boat from Capri harbour to the Blue Grotto which involves a boat ride from the harbour to just outside the Grotto, transfer into a dinghy and then lying down in the dinghy to access the grotto. Brilliant
And you can hire a small power boat to take yourself around the island which is great.
I don't know which airport you are flying into but if it's Naples then there is a bus you can catch from directly outside the terminal. Cost about 6-7 euros last time I used it.
Enjoy your trip0 -
Hi Bess
We went in to Sorrento May. Capri was beautiful, lots of lovely walks. Well worth the visit. The restaurants were more expensive than mainland, but that’s to be expected. When you return to Sorrento by boat, if you are too tired to hike back up the hill, there is a lift from the port up to the town for 1 euro per person.
It is very easy to go to both Pompeii and Herculaneum by train from Sorrento. We also went to Vesuvius by public transport. You get the train to Pompeii then buy a bus ticket to Vesuvius from the railway ticket office at Pompeii station. I think it was 12 Euro return. You get the bus across the road from the station. It is very good and takes about 45 mins to Vesuvius. It stops 250 metres from the top and you can walk up to the crater. Wear stout walking shoes and take a warm jacket, as it is quite cold and breezy up there. A scarf to cover your face and hair from the dust flying around would have been very useful on the day we went. There were people lending out walking sticks at the start of the walk in return for a small tip. We found them very useful.
We did the Amalfi coast road by local bus from Sorrento station and stopped off at Positano on the way to Amalfi. Positano is extremely pretty and interesting, especially if you like art. We then got the bus onto Amalfi, which wasn’t as pretty. The bus back to Sorrento was absolutely packed. People don’t queue, they just surge forward. The views along the coast road are stunning.
There is lots of useful information on the tripadvisor forums. Hope you have a great holiday.0 -
I went to Sorrento for a friends wedding and didnt rate the place, it was expensive, the food was poor and it was full of Camorra.
My main tip is avoid the taxi drivers like the plague they are all linked to the Camorra and will do their best to rip you off.0 -
Personally I wouldn't do both in a day unless pushed for time, they are both places you can spend a long time in. We did a 2 hours guided tour in Pompeii which was excellent but only really scratched the surface, we spent another 4 hours there!Did a really long post and it disappeared..:(

You can get a 3-site ticket which also includes the Villa Poppaea, which is better preserved than much of Pompeii and Herculaneaum and far less crowded, and it's on the circumvesuvia train line.
Yes well worth doing on a bus rather than driving so you can look at the views not the road! And you can get the boat back.Vesuvius involves the train to the station then a bus or taxi to the top

Yes, and Naples itself is worth seeing (I know that's a controversial view here but we loved it!). Had the best and probably cheapest pizza we've ever had, the people are friendly, and the archelogical museum is a must if you're wondering where all the holes in the walls in Pompeii went to!Day trip to Capri is a must. Eating out is expensive is you go for the full antipasti, primi piatti, secundi piatti plus side dishes, but unless you want to come home 3 stone heavier you won't do that every night! Most nights we just had a pizza/pasta dish which filled us up and usually paid EUR40-50 for the 4 of us inc wine/cokes0 -
Thank you all. Delayed response due to the rains but my mind is now filled with Italian adventures and will probably try them all!:T:beer:0

could I ask Bess who she booked her apartment through please?0

I suspect not the best idea- a big holiday company, but we booked an appartment with fab reviews. should give us freedom of our own place and more relaxed than the posh hotels. why?
cannot wait- even in october, it must have less rain than our summer, soggy wet all round !0
