My OH has just been made redundant so we are cutting back. We have the basic Sky package atm but we did subscribe to HD for a while so have a SkyHD+ box. If we cancel sky can we still use this box to watch Satellite freeview channels and can we use it to record programs?
Thanks for any advice.

When you cancel your Sky subscription, assuming you are not in contract, you need to give them 30 days notice.
Your viewing card will become a Freesat from Sky card and you'll be able to view a range of free to view channels ( including the HD ones) similar to those available on Terrestrial freeview.

You will NOT be able to record or playback previously recorded programmes on your Sky + box.
If you wish to do that it will cost around £10 / month. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
If you want to retain the PVR functions then you'll have to splash out on a Freesat PVR. The existing dish and LNB will be fine.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks guys. We have a thomson DVB as well which we put away when we got sky hd+ so I think we will get that out and use teresrtial freeview if we want to record anything.Starting MB- looking for Raf offers.

I'm currently watching the Euro 2012 in ITV HD and BBC HD.There are many more free HD channels.
I cancelled SKY after many years, as I realised I watch those "non-free" channels for a total of only couple of hrs a month.
So cancelled and saving a fortune(Its at least £240 a year)0 -
Just switch off the box, take out your card, switch it back on, and see what you get.0

PS: you can't get any Freeview channels via satellite-there aren't any. Freeview is a terrestial service delivered by aerial. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Not sure I understand your post macman. Previously I used my Sky dish to receive freesat channels when we cancelled with Sky(we do not have an aerial). Or do you mean something else?"I think I spent 72.75% of my life last year in the office. I need a new job!!"0 -

Yes, you can get Freesat via your Sky dish. But you can't get Freeview without an aerial. Entirely different platforms, although the channel listings are similar.
If you were using your old Sky box rather than a Freesat box, then what you were getting was Freesat From Sky, not Freesat. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
