unlock 02 iphone 3gs to use with 3 contract

Hi, my son wants to buy his friends iphone 3gs which is on O2, my son is on 3 contract. His friend is going into 02 shop and upgrading his handset on Sat, will they unlock his old iphone 3gs there and then? Will they charge for it if he is upgrading

I am guessing that we dont need to contact 3 and everything is done with 02??

Just dont want to get phone unlocked by 02 and then somehow 3 lock the handset... Never done this before so a bit confused!

Can I 'unlock' my iPhone and use it on another network?

    Pay Monthly customers

Yes. If you're a Pay Monthly customer, then you can unlock your iPhone at anytime for free. This doesn’t affect your contract though – you’ll still need to see out the rest of it.

To unlock your phone, just fill out this unlocking form and we’ll do the rest.

Once we’ve got your form, it’ll then take up to 10 days for us to get it unlocked for you. Once it’s unlocked, we’ll text you to let you know. You can then put a non-O2 Sim into the iPhone and connect it to iTunes. iTunes will then tell you the phone is unlocked.

    Pay & Go customers

Yes, you can unlock your iPhone. You’ll need to pay a £15.00 one off fee and we’ll take this from the credit on your phone.

  • I did see this on the 02 website but in theory when his friend upgrades his handset the 3gs handset wont be on the contract his new iPhone 4 will be...

Should he complete the form online now for the 3gs to be unlocked before he goes in the shop to upgrade the handset?

I just thought they could do it there and then instore rather than wait 10 days for it to be unlocked..

As far as i know the iPhone cannot be unlocked in the shop O2 have to let Apple know because they unlock it and that takes any time up to a month

I may be wrong but i haven't seen it on here were any network shop unlocks iPhone.

If the friend searches on the o2 website they can request the original handset to be unlocked - o2 will already have the imei details and it is quite straightforward..
