car written off - how to get it on road again
My car was bashed. It wasn't my fault, so I have claimed off the person who hit me. They have declared my car a financial right off. I have been vaguley informed by insurance co that I would need to get car VIT tested! I don't understand what I need to do and have done. Also how much it'll cost me to have done!
I have had the bumper fixed so the car now looks fine.
Please advice. Thanks

If it's a cat 'C' write off then the car will have to be re-MOT'd AND tested for identification to ensure that it isn't a ringer or 'cut n Shut'
It's actually called a VIC (Vehicle Identity Check) test and will cost you about £36.

FWIW I wrote off my Fiat Punto at the end of 2005 (category C) and my insurance company only told me to get a VIC test to confirm the identity of the car. Which didn't go quite according to plan as the DVLA had a digit wrong on the VIN in their database for my car (8 instead of a 3). Got it straightened out, traded it in for my current car a month later.
See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/AdviceOnBuyingAndSellingAVehicle/DG_4022107 for details of the VIC test. £36 is what it costs. Check with your insurer about needing a new MOT.
Edit: it was category C, not D.0 -
hi
My husband a month or so ago had our car vic checked it costs £38 you need to phone up vosa and book an appointment at your nearest testing station and pay for it over the phone by credit card.If you have no logbook or have sent it to an insurance company the £38 is including the logbook, it must be motd before taking it for the test but if you have no logbook it does not need to be taxed as you cant tax it without a logbook. It does however need to be insured, as far as im aware if its classed as a cat d it does not require a vic check only cat c , if it needs taxing after the test if it passes vosa issue a receipt so that you can tax the vehicle whilst waiting for the logbook from swansea. If you phone the vosa hotline and give the registration number over the phone they will tell you there and then as to if you need to take it for the test or not.Good luck0 -
okay, i finally got through to my insurance company. They say i need an mot test. I'm now confused as what i've seen on this site and others is that I need a vic test. I wish my insurance company had a call centre in england!!!!
So VIC or MOT?? are they the same thing!0 -

you can't book a vic appointment on the phone, but I have a form that you can email them (it isn't available on their website). It is quicker to email it, then send the form via snailmail0

VIC is a vehical identity check and as stated if you ring dvla they should be able to tell you if you need one
mot all cars need one to ensure that they are road worthy0 -
You need to take it for an mot first then the vic check after, they cant or wont vic check it before an mot.We paid over the phone was quick as our printer has died and therefore couldnt print off the form.0

Hi,
I have a Cat D car............You DO NOT need a Vic test, all you need is a MOT..........if you dont believe me phone the DVLA with the cars registration number and they will tell you.
You only need a vic test if its a CAT C........................0 -
apologies for putting this one someone elses thread but it was too similar to start a new one. I replaced my car yesterday, paid £1450 for x-reg escort which I'm very happy with. Then went straight to a dealer who'd offered me £1100 for my corsa and after a very scary testdrive and lots of comments about a "nasty brake shudder" he went and HPI'd the car. Apparently they told him it was a cat D write off in 2005 about a year before I bought it, and the mileage didn't tally with the current reading. I have another dealer expecting me with the car on tuesday and he's said he'll HPI it tomorrow and ring me if any probs. So what do I do now? I've paid out for the new one expecting money straight back for the old one and I don't know if anyone will buy it. Is it still legal to sell the car privately if the other dealer doesn't want it? Do I just play dumb about the HPI and hope a private buyer doesn't check it? Also I have no off street parking so will have to keep both cars insured. Any help appreciated thanks.Smokefree since 27-9-20070
