Decorating Hall & Stairs

A local decorator came round to give us a price for wallpapering and painting our hall and stairs. We wanted anaglypta paper on the walls and then two coats of emulsion. We also wanted the woodwork and ceiling painted. We only have four doors to paint in total. We were to provide all paint and wallpaper
He quoted £800 and I thought that was way over the top considering we had already stripped the wallpaper and washed all the paintwork with sugar soap.
What do you think?

I have just paid a decorator £175.00 to do my stairs, thought that was alot but guess there was a lot of glossing involved! He provided all the white paint and I just got the colour for the walls. This included 4 doors! Ive learnt lately best to get 3 or 4 quotes and they will differ lots!0

I would say this quote is excessive. We paid a decorator £500 to decorate our entire lounge (20ft x 12ft) and our hallway (3 doors, walls, skirting, dado rail etc).
The lounge was just replastered. Decorator papered one feature wall and painted all others. Hall walls were real bad so decorator was a day just rubbing them down and filling. All paint was included. Only thing we had to buy on top was the wallpaper.
I would recommend getting a few more quotes. And also ask them to break down the price as to what is materials and what is labour.0 -
i would say it is a tad pricey , you have given no dimensions so it is hard to judge from what you have written , but if you allow 1 day to prep and do ceilings ,1 day to paper 1 day to do walls , 1 day to u/c and gloss , say £120 per day plus extra £50 for sundries should be around around £530ish , obviously stairs are more tricky to paper than a square room but unless it's a massive h/s/l but only has 4 doors then it is a bit dear , unless you're in london where you could probably double it0

Hallway stairs and landing is always the trickiest one to do. If you have a double height ceiling in the landing, then the longest drop will often require 2 people and given the complexities and angles of stairways, the anaglypta is more like a 2 day job. So if he had put in for 5 days at £150 a day, then there is your £800.
But get other quotes.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
I live outside London (near Heathrow Airport). There is a long drop for the paper but a lot of the prep had already been done.
We will do it ourselves - I was just wondering what other people thought of the price.
I have decorated the hall and stairs before on my own when I was a single mum and I know it's a lot of work but hadn't realised how much a professional charges for it.0 -
remember , that when you get a price that is not what is going into the decorators pocket , overheads have to be factored into the price0

There's a day added already , what you would class as already done and mines will be worlds apart.
I wouldn't guarantee any job i never prepped.0 -
Are you going to give me a quote then John?
We can't afford £800 so we have to do it ourselves. We've got three quarters of the papering done (and we're shattered)
I didn't think it was a fair quote so I asked the question on here and got a mixed response.
So far, it's looking good! :T0 -
Really depends on hall size but given you have prepped so much I think it does sound pricey.
We had a couple of quotes for ours in a 3 bed terrace in the north and they came in between £550-700.
We did it ourselves in the end.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

I'm a 1000 mile round trip, the accom would eat into that
All seriousness , i reckon there about 200-300 too dear, but it's near london and i havn't seen it so can't give an accurate costing, but good luck with it.0
