Well better to recommend an alternative in the first place, as opposed to just telling people to uninstall it. Running no anti-virus is indeed suicide. In my experience a lot of the free programs don't cut it, I ran spybot, adaware, spydoctor... and a couple of others on my old laptop, still had lots of virus problems with it and eventually the motherboard gave out.

With Norton I haven't had a single virus yet and my laptop is running smooth as ever, so I fully recommend it.

well if you actually read the posts, i recommended swapping to one of the freeware ones that lucien_roach referred to. but feel free to launch into me without bothering ;)

and if you only run spyware programs rather then actual anti-virus ones, then of course you'll have problems  spybot and adaware aren't for virus protection! if you want advice on the best freeware anti-virus software, then this isn't the board for it - the techie board has lots of information for anyone who's interested and the freeware stuff is considered to be more than adequate at preventing problems.

dont think you'd actually class them as antivirus progs.

i'd have to agree with others about norton, really slowed my computer down. its very effective at stopping viruses but too many 'bells' on it.
if you can get a copy of symantec corporate, has the same protection without all the !!!!!!.

also spybot, adaware and such r good for getting rid of spyware, trackers, etc that antivirus might not pick up on.
What's it going to be, eh?

If you suffer from virus problems then you need to change the way you use your computer, not install loads of bloaty software.

Be careful about what websites you browse, ensure you have a software firewall turned on if you are not behind a router, use Firefox/Opera instead of IE, etc.

I never suffer from virus problems and TBH my anti virus software is pretty minimal.

I have always used avg, zone alarm, spybot, adaware, spyware blasterware and run ccleaner everyday and all 4 pc i have these on are fine with no problems! Used to have Nortons untill i discovered how much it hogged!

So anyone got any ideas where i can get a laptop/notebook around £200-£250? Like i mentioned before, it would have to be a refurbed or second hand machine with DVD drive, wireless, xp!

I would stretch to £329 from dell, but i can't have vista, as one of the main reasons i want this is to trasfer taps and video from my pc to my Topfield PVR and Topfield don't support Vista :(

    Any help much appreciated
