That's a cracking deal since they have Intel Core Duo (not Core2Duo but a damn good CPU in it's own right) processors (which are more efficient than the AMD Turion in the 1501)

    How is that then ?

Turion 64 X2 is better in low load and medium power draw and the Intel Duo better at higher, there isn't much between them at all apart from the fact the basic one is slow compared to the X2 TL50. Buy either machine (6400 or 1501) though as they are great.
  • i'd swap now - norton slows up computers so much that you will immediately notice the difference after you uninstall it!

actually my main Pc has been running really slow recently that might be why. this one seems to be fine with it tho i haven't noticed any difference since i installed it.

I'm not really the biggest fan of norton but theres not much out there which is much better i've found, i think norton is a rip off considering the shoddy protection it provides for £40/50 a year,

all other security suite let viruses onto your computers somehow (like norton) i only chose norton because it has a huge backing behind so it gets regular updates (and i hate mcaffee cause their software broke my Pc once)

at the end of the day tho if i wanted to get on to anyone's Pc i could easily find software to allow me to. home security software is balls

hi, i am looking to buy a laptop from Currys or Dixons, basically a well know high street shop, I dont mind buying it online as long as they are well know and have a high street shop, (hopes that makes sense). My budget is no more that £400 but I want the best possible laptop that i can get for that,
No it doesn't make sense. Highstreet shops = Overheads = Higher prices

Realistically if you want the best possible laptop you should be buying from an online retailer without any high street stores, such as laptopsdirect, for which I bought my current Sony Vaio from and I've had no problems at all with it.

It makes little difference who you actually buy the laptop from, the warrenty/after sales service is not with them, but the actual laptop manufacturer. Therefore the make of laptop you go for is rather important in my book. Can't go wrong with a Vaio, though you'd be very hard pressed to find one for that sort of money! I'd check out the toshiba satellite, or acer aspire.

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/ has an acer with core duo and 512 ram on its main page for 399, which is a lot of performance for the money.

Go for it, then come back moaning a month later when your computer is working at half the speed it was on Norton and crashing every other hour due to virus problems.

i'm not saying have no virus protection! i'm not daft - something like AVG combined with spybot should be perfectly fine at protecting you. there are a few options that are free for personal use but you need to pay as a business user.

Instead of creating a new thread, i have the same question, but to test you MSE'ers My budget is £200 :)

All i need is wireless network card for the internet, XP OS & dvd rom. I don't mind second hand, but the ones on Ebay are mainly from reburb shops that can't garuantee that the screen will not be craked once you have purchased it!

    Any help most appreciated

Well the Core Duo run cooler AFAIK and that's always good in a laptop isn't it?

Norton's bloody useless, I don't know how you can defend it at all.

I'm not much of a fan of AVG either however, use F-Secure products myself.

not so true anymore - also what are you going to be upgrading on a laptop? Also with the sale of goods act on your side providing cover for up to 6 years, why would you look at repairs being made by anyone else but dell?

Anything could want to be upgraded.. example: DVDRW to a blueray drive..

    Loads of possibilities!

Well better to recommend an alternative in the first place, as opposed to just telling people to uninstall it. Running no anti-virus is indeed suicide. In my experience a lot of the free programs don't cut it, I ran spybot, adaware, spydoctor... and a couple of others on my old laptop, still had lots of virus problems with it and eventually the motherboard gave out.

With Norton I haven't had a single virus yet and my laptop is running smooth as ever, so I fully recommend it.
