What do you do when you want to scream

but cant?
Around 3 / 4 times I week I work until at least 7pm sometimes later, heck I have even still been in the office at mid-night on numerous occasions, for which I do not get paid.
Most days I am at my desk my 8.30 but the past two weeks have been a bit of a nightmare tube wise and I have been a bit late a couple of times, and I'm talking 5 -10 minutes at the most.
I was 30 minutes late this morning as I wasnt feeling great and on a bit of a go slow, rang office and told them that was fine.
Came in to have the boss's wife (who doesn't even work here!) say "You get paid from 0900-1730, he is thinking of docking your wages everytime your late you know" with a 'everyone else will think I'm joking but I am actually just being a b1tch' smile on her face.
I was rather proud of myself as rather quickly I replied "well as long as he starts paying me for everytime I work past 1730 then I happy for him to do so" wiped the smile of her face = result!
But I am soooooooooo flaming angry, how dare she!!
To even say it as a "joke" when she knows the hours I work, the weekends I put in and dont get paid for it, I am so mad I want to scream (or cry).
Dont really expect any replies, just needed a bit of a rant.

Aww it's tough, isn't it. My lot moan about 'clockwatchers', yet they're quick enough to notice if you're 10 mins late or knock off 5 mins early!
Grab a cushion at home and beat up the floor or sofa with it. Works for me...

Well l think you put her in her place beautifully.

How well do you get on with your boss? Maybe you could have a word with him and make him know you don't appreciate his wife sticking her oar in with comments like that, especially as you work plenty of unpaid hours.

People are always so quick to pick up on the negative and not mention the positives. Of course she made a big show and took the opportunity to belittle you when you were late...why do people love putting others down? She sounds like shes on a power trip, except, shes not actually in charge is she?! Dont suppose you can complain to the boss about his own wife, I suppose she thinks shes safe.
Good comeback though

Maybe you should work to rule for a few weeks and see how that goes down

As it appears you work a phenomenal number of hours at extrremely unsocial times for no pay, why are you surprised the boss's wife talks to you the way she does?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
As suggested above, turn up at exactly 8:55 and leave at 17:35 and leave anything that you can't finish in those hours. Either that or look for another job that doesn't expect you to work a minimum of 6-8 hours unpaid overtime every week.0

I would just work 9-5:30 from now on if thats how you get spoken to.
Also why do you do all that extra work if you don't get paid for it? seems crazy to me to kill yourself for nothing.0 -
I agree with the above poster, start at 08.55 and finish at 17.35. Why all the unpaid overtime?
One thing I have found in my experience, sadly is that those who work the hardest ( long hours, stay late, start early, change shifts at the drop of a hat, go the extra mile) are rarely appreciated, and after a time it becomes expected.
I usually find a large glass of wine and a good moan to my friend helps me releive the stress, especially in the kind of situation you describe.

PS - think what you said to the bosses wife was great! wish I could think so quickly on my feet.

How much influence does your boss's missus actually have? Is he a bit under the thumb or does he wear the trousers, workwise at least? If it's the latter then she's just an inadequate cow who's clearly run out of shopping ideas and thought she'd pop into the office to alpha female all the other women and can safely be ignored.
If it's the former, then that's more worrying...
Either way, unfortunately you can't complain to the boss!"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I agree with this.
As long as you are prepared to do all this unpaid overtime, your boss is not going to look at staffing levels.
I would ensure you get a tube that gets you to work in plenty of time (so your wages won't be docked if you are a little late) but either don't go into the workplace until just before your start time or faff about making yourself a coffee or whatever.
I was in the same position as you, I worked flexi time but my boss wanted to tie me down to fixed hours.
I told him what times I would work (8:00am to 4:00 pm with 30 minutes for lunch between 12:00 & 12:30).
This went on for 3 days until he asked me to do something at 4:02pm (when I had shut my PC down and was putting my coat on) and I said I didn't have time and it would have to wait until the following day.
Next day - surprise! surprise! - he said that he'd had a rethink and was happy for me to go back to flexi time.
Hope you get it sorted - you are being taken advantage of - and your boss's wife sounds a real cow so well done for putting her in her place.0
