MSE News: Firms charge existing customers, but not new customers, to call

Good advice most of the time, but there are exceptions.
British Airways have a number for calling from outside the UK - 0191 490 7901 - but try to use this and your call is met by a recorded message saying to use the 0844 number
, and of course you have paid for the call.
And Halifax does the same when I call to tell them I may be using my credit card outside the UK.
If you need to call BA, they usually charge you £25 for phone booking or changes anyway.0 -
Whats new Nothing where has which been been for the last few years this practice has been going on for a long time a little bit of savey on your part and their is ways around it0

I think Which have been a bit slow if they have only just noticed this. Companies have been doing it for years now.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Always check on the company website to see if you can email them rather than use an 0845 tel number....& complain that they only offer this chargeable service. I inevitably get a call or an email with an 0800 number to use. I refuse to use 0845 numbers on principle, it is shocking customer service & if we keep on complaining we might persuade some companies to treat us better!0

To complain ring 08457 212 212
Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to p*** us off.Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to p*** us off.0 -
Your call is very important to us (we are making money from it), you are in a queue while the call centre operator is dealing with another customer.0

0845 numbers had a place 20+ years ago when the phone call costs varied according to whether or not the call was classed as local or national.
Now that this doesn't exist and most phone packages have free minutes included there is absolutely no reason for these rip off 08 numbers to exist at all.
As for the "your call is important to us" message that plays every time you call - simple solution is for the banks to employ more people to asnwer the phone in the first place!0 -
