Road Map Recommendation

Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend a good road map for North-East US and Eastern Canada? Preferably at a decent scale where it doesn't only show the main interstates.

Going on a road trip next month and want to take a physical map to go with our sat nav. Used an Insight 1 : 800,000 of California last year and it was excellent.

Thanks!

It's not the map it's who is reading it,

Mrs. Bob the Saver can't even read a one inch to 1: 1 map !!

I use a Rand McNally map book when I am touring in the US, it has good coverage of minor roads and detailed maps of major cities as well as highlights of tourist attractions.

    ETA
The one I have covers Canada as well :)

I've always used Rand McNally easy-to-read maps for travelling in the USA, they were brilliant but RN seem to have stopped doing them :(
I've been looking at map books (on Amazon etc) but there's too much choice and I find it difficult to judge scale etc without being able to actually see the pages.
A recommendation would be very helpful (to me and the OP) :)

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

If you can get to London or Bristol visit Stanfords, who I'm sure will have a vast range of maps for you to examine in person. Otherwise, check the website, and maybe you could ring them to get some advice.

That's the exact same problem I'm having Jackie!

Thanks Agrinnall, I live in London so will definitely check them out.

    The one I have is:
The Road Atlas, deluxe midsize 2007 including 'Travel info for city lovers'
It is A4 size and has lots of good information for the traveller
see scan below for Washington state.

If you live anywhere near Fife I could let you borrow it for your trip :)

See this page for current publications.

Thanks, torbrex, for both your reply and your kind offer.
I do actually have the same atlas (2010 version) and while it is brilliant for planning prior to the trip I find the scale too small for navigating while 'on the road'.
I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and submit to buying a SatNav on my next trip :(

I have travelled extensively across the states (48 of them) and I look at the map in the morning and pick out some sights that I would like to visit that day and a possible stopping point at night then just 'wing it' for the rest of the day.
I have never been tempted to use a satnav on holiday as I seldom know where I am going so that I can enter it in. I will admit to being lost more often than normal but that is the beauty of my trips :)

I did learn early to keep at least half a tank of fuel in the car as a minimum, I was travelling from Sequoia NP to Death Valley and got lost up a mountain in the dark with no towns and getting very low on fuel and the temperature outside dropping rapidly (January) I tell you my pucker was twitching that night. I eventually found a gas station on the road off the mountain but had to drive another 3 hours before I found a motel that was open.

We're not as well travelled as you (yet!) we've done 6 states so far, will do 4 more this summer and 4 more planned for next Easter. We'll catch up eventually :D.
Planning our next trip is my hobby and what keeps me going between trips (sad, but true :o) so each state is thoroughly researched, accomodation is booked (we are currently limited to travelling at peak times) and we know know everything we want to see/visit before we arrive -we're not inflexible though, we'll re-arrange/cancel/detour as we go if we find something else we want to do.
We've taken many 'alternative routes' during our trips, but never actually been lost to the extent that we don't know where we are. I am opposed, in principle, to the idea of SatNav but unless I can find suitable maps for future trips I'm afraid I may have to capitulate.
