Hi guys,
Was hoping people with some experience of this might be able to advise on this. My O2 contract is just about to expire (iPhone 3GS 24 months) and I'm not sure what my best option is.
Due to App/iTunes store purchases (and being a shameless Apple fanboy) I'm pretty much locked into the iPhone for the foreseeable future but I don't want to upgrade to the iPhone 4S now as we all know the iPhone 5 will be out later this year (got caught out by that with the release of the iPhone 4 last time!)
So...my question is, what's my best option? I spoke to O2 but all they wanted to do was get me on another contract and suggest that I 'may' be able to upgrade to the iPhone 5 when it is released. As far as I'm concerned, that sounds like I'd get spammed with a hefty up front cost for the handset. Would I be in a better bargaining position with O2 if I just remained on my current tariff until the iPhone 5 is released and then request an upgrade or move to another provider?
Alternatively, should I switch to an O2 simplicity (sim only) contract of either 12 or 1 month and then ask to upgrade at a later date? If I kept my current handset and switched to a 12 month simplicity contract would I be able to get the iPhone 5 for a reasonable price when it is released? I can't help but feel that I'd be in a stronger position if I was on the 1 month rolling contract as I would be able to leave at any time...
Quite a long post for such a simple question but I'm sure there much be more people out there who are in a similar position! Thanks for any advice.

Think you have answered your own question, go sim only and when the next handset is out, you can decide if it is for you and whether you want ot buy it outright or on credit with a long contract.0

It is the min term that expires, not the contract. You have to give 30 days notice to cancel/change it.
When iPhone is released, there will be no real 'deals' on it. All the 'deals' will be worse than a sim-free phone plus a sim-only contract.
So, IMO you have two options:- 'Upgrade' to some other phone, sell it, add money and buy your desired '5' when it is released.
- Switch to a cheap sim-only contract and wait until '5' is released.

Hope its ok to use this thread to ask a similar question - i'm on a 24 month Iphone 3GS contract and wondered what happened at the end of that 24 month term - do i have an obligation to stay with them or take out another contract?A home is not a home ..... without a dog0

You don't have any obligations except giving a 30 days notice if you want to leave. Otherwise it goes on without a new minimum term - until you give the notice.0

No, you can cancel, keep the phone and switch to another provider if you like. Or you could keep your current phone and switch to a sim only (simplicity) contract. Or you could get a new phone and start a new contract.0
