Using backpack as cabin luggage

    The volume is irrelevant, what matters is that the bag does not exceed any of the given height, width and depth dimensions. So it's really just a question of looking at the terms and conditions of the airline you are using and then getting out a ruler to check the bag when it's packed.

    Exactly!
    And of course it will need to be within any weight limit the airline imposes.

    As above pack it and measure it to see if it will exceed the limits. I recently went hiking in Italy for a week and just took a black army issue daypack as hand luggage. It required some squishing to get it all in but it worked out reasonably well.
