Bed From Ikea

Hi there,
We're contemplating buying a bed from Ikea. They sell mattress protector pads with them but are they worth the money?

We bought a bed from Ikea and we bought one of the mattress protector sheets to go over the mattress. It's not the 'pad' thingy, but it looks like a fitted sheet with a rubbery bit. I'm not sure that the pads are worth it, but it's definitely worth getting something to protect the mattress generally. Also, Ikea beds are such odd sizes that you have to buy the bedding etc from there too, as nothing else fits!

Hmm, I bought a bed and a mattress from IKEA when I moved into my unfurnished flat. However, I've always used the fitted sheets that I had previously bought at Wilkinsons, to fit a sofa-bed in the furnished flat I was living in before.

The sheet does fit, though admittedly not very well.

I think that getting some sort of mattress protector is a good idea - after all, it's much cheaper to replace a protector than it is to replace a mattress. Whether you bought that mattress from IKEA or not doesn't make any difference.

sorry to be a moaning minnie but we bought a bed from ikea, the very cheapest at £75 for the frame (sorry can't remember what its called but its got a big solid wood headboard)

anyway please do not buy this, it has been nothing but hassle and OH has to get out of bed and fix it at least twice a night (no joke!) its not the way its put together (with my fair hands how could it possibly be wrong???) its just the slats don't fit properly into where they should and are not properly supported.

as i generally love everything ikea i'm thinking it was just because it was, at £75, ridiculously cheap. but i would not recommend this particular model.

oh and we went to TK Maxx for our mattress protecter. got every kind under the sun for every budget, and much cheaper than ikea.

EDIT: just looked at ikea online and they don't seem to have it anymore...

just had a look, cant find the bed we got from ikea sept 06, it was wooden, slats, about £300. like katmc2k ours kept breaking, theyre just not supported properly for anything more than sleeping. we called and complained, nothing came of it so we dismantled what was left of it, and were stuck with a odd sized mattress and topper (both excellent, very supportive, can't feel springs/slats, and clean well). we bought a new frame (wooden) from argos(- not online either!) about £300, easier to put together, much stronger, had a middle of bed support and hasn't broken yet. managed to squeeze the ikea mattress into it too.

we got an ikea mattress pad, about £60, excellent, makes a difference.

just beware that the beds are odd sizes, they are larger than normal british sizes, so you have to buy the mattresses from ikea, and the standard british sheets are a little on the small side.

No "odd sizes", they are European sizes

I wouldn't buy a bed from Ikea because when the matttress needs replacing, you are limited on where you can buy from because they don't sell the bed to be UK standard. It's better to buy a bed frame with a UK size as then you have more choice where you can buy replacement mattresses from.

Also from my experience in selling beds and mattresses, we get 100's of requests for mattresses to fit Ikea size beds because the Ikea mattresses don't last. Quite a few mattress manufacturers can supply mattresses in Ikea sizes, but they tend to cost more because they aren't standard sizes.

yeah with ours the frame is lovely its the wooden slats that aren't supported, we also bought ours in sept 06. have considered complaining but haven't as of yet and sadly cannot afford a new one. as for the size difference, i didn't even realise this, could be because we ordered a mattress online on ebay from germany (european size i suppose)

oh and btw:

It's not because you bought it from Germany, Ikea sizes are all continental.

It's so nice to hear about other people having problems with Ikea beds (not that it's nice to have a problem but you know what I mean lol!). We've had trouble with the slats too - the midbeams just aren't wide enough to support them both, especially if you're a couple who have very different weights! We had an awful time with our bed collapsing almost continually - we had to get a new midbeam and new rubber 'slat-holder' bits. Eventually we 'solved' the problem by binding the slats to the midbeam with some cord, and packing them in at the side with some cardboard. It's not ideal but it's held up till now and is still going!
