PC randomly froze

Options
Title is self-explanatory.

It is the type of freeze where everything just stops but the display is still on.

Here are my specs.

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-960 (3.20GHz)
ASUS® P6X58D-E: DDR3, USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s
TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE
12GB KINGSTON HYPER-X TRI-DDR3 1600MHz
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX560 Ti
TB WD CAVIAR GREEN WD10EARS, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64MB CACHE
CORSAIR 650W TX SERIES (TX650) 80+ ULTRA QUIET PSU

Any suggestions regarding how I diagnose the problem?

Thank you.

  • Could be any number of things really, just google something like 'my pc keeps freezing' and have a look through the results.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't try, it's an invaluable resource. Who's to say the first result won't give you the answer your looking for. I've solved many problems with a quick google search.

Event Viewer just says shut down unexpected. Doesn't really give me much information.

I did use google but I saw multiple reasons as to why a pc can freeze so I came here for more specific advice.

Looks like its a hardware issue because whocrashed found no dump files.

So now I have to find the component that is faulty.

    Any dust inside the case?

One side of the case is see through and it looks fine but the outside case is really dusty. So it could be dusty inside if I took a closer look.

Just thought of something: press [WinKey]+[Pause/Break], select Advanced system settings and look in the Startup and Recovery section. Under System failure the first box should be checked and the drop-down menu should read Kernel memory dump.
