Nationwide Bank - lost cheque

I deposited a US Dollar cheque into our Flex account on the 11th of April, received a receipt for it, and was told that it would take a "few weeks" to show up on our account.

6 weeks later I called the bank to find out why it still wasn't in our account, and after checking they came back to say that it hadn't arrived from the branch to the cheque clearing centre. They would investigate and get back to me.

Further weeks, several calls and a visit to the branch with my receipt, it transpires that the Bank have lost the cheque.

But here's the crunch... It's not their problem!! I have got to try and contact the issuers of the cheque, get them to stop the first cheque and re-issue another.

Another fruitless visit to the branch for a meeting with the manager, and they are sticking to their position. i.e. If the Nationwide Bank lose a cheque, they admit in writing it's their fault, but sorting it is nothing to do with them.

I am astounded at their attitude, total lack of customer care and arrogance towards us and our predicament. If I can't get a replacement cheque - I lose it all!!!

Advice and comments appreciated please.

    Try to get a replacement.

But pursue this via Nationwide too. Complain. Escalate to the FOS. Document all time and costs involved in trying to get the replacement cheque. Document all the time and costs involved in complaining.

How much is the cheque for? A modest amount and you might be able to convince them that it's more economic to pay up than reimburse your time and costs.

The bank is absolutely right in what they are telling you. As the cheque has been lost the will have no idea who to approach for a duplicate, so they should be asking you (politely) to help them resolve this issue.

You are entitled to complain as the bank has admitted they have lost your cheque. Once everything is sorted they should be meeting any of your “out of pocket” expenses, so make a note of the time you have spent sorting this out, phone calls, emails, etc. I would also expect them to compensate you for this error as well.

In this case the cheque has been lost internally at the bank, however a lot of times the cheques are lost in the post as the bank will have to send the cheque to the issuing bank by airmail.

OP Check the terms and conditions when Nationwide accepted the cheque from you.
They could have lost the cheque internally or it could have been lost when sent by mail to the US office of the drawers bank.
