Consumer Rights - Resizing a Wedding Ring?

Hi, I was looking for some advice...I purchased my Gents wedding ring around 4 years ago and having lost some weight I needed my wedding ring resized to 3 sizes smaller.
I asked in the same jewellers where I purchased my ring from for help. They advised that becuase the ring was a rope style ring (White gold band follwed by a Yellow Gold Band etc) that they may have to join two sections together (ie 2 white gold bands together). I said that would be fine as long as it was a good finish and I wouldnt see the join.
One week later I returned to find my ring was joined awfully with the join clearly showing on the top of the ring with a really awful solder type smudge of gold over the white band....in my opinion a real bodge job....
A bit of an exchange of words over the workmanship ensued which ended in them sending it away to their repairers again for comment....
I was wondering what my rights are....the ring was in great condition prior to the resizing apart from obvious wear...I have paid for a resize which I am told should not be noticed. Have I a right to complain or request a new ring of the same kind?
It's a difficult subject and I now feel like I should just put up with the repair...perhaps I should have known it would be difficult to join and shouldn't have expected too much!
Have I any rights on my side here?
Kind Regards
DB

I am sorry to hear the resizing did not leave the appearance of the ring as you had hoped.
It sounds as though the jeweller has now agreed with you, and have sent the item away for repairs.
My advice would be to wait and see how the repaired item is returned. Hopefully it will fully meet your expectations on its return. If not you should ensure you once again bring this to the attention of the jeweller when you go to collect the item.
If, ultimately, the jeweller is unable to satisfactorily repair the item, your only option would be to take the ring elsewhere for repair and attempt to recover any costs incurred from the first jeweller.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks for your comment, This confirms what I would do in practice - but I was more concerned legally with my rights....
I am paying for a service, do I have the right to demand an alternative ring or compensation for the damage or ill repair - is the law on my side as a consumer or is a case for the small claims?
Many Thanks

Sounds like you are already hoping to claim compo.
Opportunism or what?
I thought you said this was your wedding ring? Why would you want another ring. Surely you want your wedding ring, albeit resized to a quality finish, don't you?0 -
Based on the 1st attempt to resize my ring - my optimism has somewhat disappeared, so don't judge my sceptiscism of a better repair - it really was awful, I can only think the best option is to replace it. When someone has butchered your wedding ring to such an extent I would rather a new ring than an abomination...
Now then on to some real advice....does anyone actually know my rights regarding a repair?0 -
You'd be entitled to your money back on the repair without a doubt. If they have effectively ruined your ring you should get a replacement (or compensated to the value of) but given it is your wedding ring it'll probably be better you keep trying to get it repaired elsewhere or melted down and reforged.
Any additional costs should really come from this first company that have made a hash of it but enforcing your consumer rights may well require going to small claims court over it. Did you sign any paperwork prior to the item going away first time?Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Hi Thanks for your response. No I never signed any forms of any kind.....do you see this as important in any potential pursuit of a claim?
I have been called back to store and have been advised that the repair has been made good, so I guess I will keep you posted about the actual state of the repair.....;)0 -
Are you more worried about your wedding ring or the compo?0
-
And there was me thinking that this forum might actually offer up some useful advice, instead what I get are bored people offering nothing but snipes and swipes at genuine concerns.....
Forgive me, but as I mentioned in my first post, I felt my wedding ring was so far abominated that repair was probably not an option...why is the question of compensation such an awful thing to ask about....Ok it's my wedding ring, but if it's beyond repair it's beyond repair!....the fact that it' doesn't look the way it did doesn't detract from my memories of the day or marriage at all, but the thought that someone has not treated my precious wedding ring the way it should have been treated angers me, and to chastise the question of compensation tells me that you have no experience of this, therefore keep your thoughts to yourself because you have nothing to offer!
Anyone else, except the self rightoues that have already pipped in, have any genuine advice about my genuine problem.....
Let me ask those of you who have chipped in above, if your son/daughter were injured in a car accident...would you not pursue an insurance claim for their injuries if someone else was at fault....of course you would! #Justsaying!0 -

I'd probably concentrate on making sure my child was ok. But that's just me. #justsaying!0 -
comparing a ring to a child in a car accident is a bit over the top.0
