If I had to watch what I spent on holiday, I wouldn't go. That wouldn't be a holiday for me.

That's my sentiment too, we book and plan good holidays to make up for the stress of work, we get the best deal we can for the places we want to go and we do the things we want to do when we are there.

We get the best deal on the currency and have cards that don't charge a fortune to spend abroad, check a few places for best deal on the hotel and flights or whatever. ;)

I posted this very MSE tip in the Cheap Airport Parking Discusion thread in Feb

Use Quidco and they actually pay you to park :D

I did see that actually, I'm surprised it has not been picked up on by more people. It can save an absolute fortune!

We use a £7.00 kettle from Asda - [STRIKE]steal[/STRIKE] take a few extra cartons of milk from the ferry and Bob's your uncle!!
If hotel doesn't have tea making set, take a travel kettle or heat element, and buy a box of long-life milk locally, (doesn't need a fridge). Of course take tea bags.
  • Instead of buying loads of travel adapters, Buy one and a multiplug extension, then you can use 1 adapter for the extension and 4-6 UK plug appliances plugged into it.

After shelling out a hefty sum to get there, how do you keep costs down when abroad? Our top 10 tips top this email, what are yours? Packed lunch to the beach, sharing childcare with families you meet on hols.

That last bit has to be THE most irresponsible piece of advice I have ever seen on this forum. Interesting she has not been back on to retract that stupid suggestion. Well done MSE Debs!!!

Watch the total load though - the adapter (and sometimes the foreign sockets) will likely have a lower max load than a UK 13 amp socket. Plug a hairdryer, iron or kettle in and it'll likely use close to the max capacity. Plug two such devices in and you'll probably blow a fuse

Just checked two of our adapters, one is 5 amps and the other is 7.5 amps. So that's 1.2KW or 1.8KW max load assuming 240V.

Everyone seems to be getting a bit het up about the childcare comment, I don't think anyone is suggesting leaving your kids with another family you just met!

What they mean is hiring a childsitter and leaving two sets of kids with them together and sharing the cost, this would then be just like leaving your children with the hotel holiday club reps etc :)

So still leaving your kids with people you do not know? That's better how?
