Rj45 telephone line adapter to bt pstn master convertor

Options
My 2 phones and broadband router are connected in my main room via what I believe is an RJ45 line adapter (plus a filter). It just has the words 'pstn main' on it

I have two queries.

I have other sockets in my property and another adapter which is labelled secondary. When I plug this into my other sockets (they are in pairs elsewhere), I can get a dial tone but not a ringing tone if someone calls me.

Now if I move the adapter labelled 'pstn main' to the other sockets, my phones do ring. If I was to purchase more rj45 adapters I am not sure whether they would work in both places. I had a recent BT engineer visit who said the adapter converted the socket into a master socket. I am wondering what the secondary adapter is meant to do.

My other query is proabably just a rant regarding BT Infinity

The BT engineer visited to convert me from broadband but he cannot do this in the main room as he said he needs to attach it to the main cable coming into the property which should be on an NT5E or master socket. But it is not and he says he cannot connect identify the main cable as there are too many cables which he says makes the apartment a networking system.

He said he can make my existing socket with the pstn line the only working socket in the house. My neighbour has been converted but the way another engineer has done it is to connect the router in the cupboard in her hall cupboard. However if I had mine connected in my hall cupboard I could not link my bt vision to it which is by ethernet cable.

I'm not sure what annoys me most, the builders for not putting in an NT5E or the BT engineer who couldn't identify the cable and said it could be sorted but he wasn't there to do that amount of work.

BT have arranged a new appointment and have said they will send an 'experienced' engineer out next week. I would rather not lose the other sockets if I can use them with the Rj45 adapters, the building is only 10 years old

It's a bit difficult to understand what you are describing, but if you mean that the builder has used RJ45 sockets for the phone wiring then it's a bit tough on the BT installer to blame him.

If your wiring really does comprise pairs of RJ45 sockets then it has not been done to any standard that BT would recognise.

The BT installer would have been allowed enough time to install to a bog-standard master socket layout, and not to be trying to figure out someone elses wiring.

Having said that, it sounds like you have a wiring system installed that will allow you to run not only phones but also a data network around the whole apartment - if you can figure out how it is wired. Generally, you would expect all of the sockets to be wired back to a distribution panel hidden away somewhere - do you have anything like that?

Sorry for not replying sooner Fwor, I was going to take some photos and post them. I think it is a data network around the apartment.

However, BT booked a new appointment and when I rang them about it they said they would send out a more experienced engineer.

This engineer identified the right cable and put in an NTE5 in the cupboard with the BT infinity box. My router is in the main room and and my BT Vision is connected in there via ethernet cables.

His manager also arrived on site to check how it was being done and was happy with the work.

All of my sockets should still be working too, I just need to get some socket adapters. These are what I assume I need

Sounds like you have a CAT5/CAT6 network. If done correctly all of the sockets around the apartment should run back to a patch panel. None of the sockets will do anything unless the patch panel is patched to other devices
