TV License - wrong address.

I have recently moved house and so I called the TV license people a couple of weeks ago to transfer my license from the old address to my new one. The bizarre thing is that although I have been making my direct debit payments every month since I set it up in September 2007, it was for a different address to that which it was taken out for. I remember setting the license up over the phone, so the number may have been taken down incorrectly. I don’t think I ever received a copy of the license in the post, nor any follow up paperwork, but to be honest, when I signed up to the license all those years ago it was the first time I’d done so as I was previously living at my parents so didn’t know I’d receive anything through the post.

Anyway, after eventually cancelling the direct debit, and starting a new license for my new house (which was a pain anyway as they could not see that the address I now live at existed and it took a week to add it to their system), I was given an email address for me to contact because apparently I can claim back all the money that I’d paid over the last 5 years because it was for the wrong address.

My question is have any of you come across this before? Surely I can’t claim it back because of the fact I have to have a TV license anyway. Could I get in to trouble for not technically having a license for the address I was living at?

I know I could just email them and find out if I have a case, but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this.

Thank you.

Accept the money and then get hit for viewing without a licence? :) If they screwed up, you could prove you bought a licence in all good faith - and if they didn;t write to you, there was no reason to assume your address was ever unlicenced.

You've not been disadvantaged, and would have to have paid anyway - just make sure they DO send you a coirrect licence for your new address!

I wasn't making that mistake again. It's been emailed to me.

A claim it'll be. Thanks for the advice.
