10,000 Posts I've been Money Tipped!
Well today I have discarded 4 egg shells as I made some fairy cakes and a Victoria sponge cake.My rubbish which is from Tuesday, and is in an old free supermarket bag barely comes to the halfway mark.I recycle all of the paper and empy tins in a seperate bag.Although I have a garden it is mainly now laid to patio as I can no longer dig or even weed as my joints won't bend as they used to so no good composting anything.
Food most definitely goes either into my freezer if surplus, or into me or my grandchildren when they visit. I have a several spare jam jars at the moment that I will pass on to my friend next Tuesday as she makes jams and pickles.
I even had a friend who phoned me today and said she had 6 black plastic bags of wool and did I want them as her son was going to take them to the tip:eek:. She is clearing her loft out.I immediatly said yes, as what I don't use for my blanket making (I make them for the Linus Project) I will find a home for.My children and grandchildren call me the original recycler as I can usually find a home for almost anything and hate waste of any sort. I don't hoard things I just like to make sure that anything I have can be put to a good use if possible again whether its food from left overs or books to the charity shop, or magazines which I always pass on to the Age Concern lady who picks up my neighbour in the bus once a week. The mags go to the pop-in parlour for others to read.
I even recycle mine and my families Christmas cards as I do crafting, and make cards for the McMillan cancer charity.
It makes my blood boil to think of good food going to waste when there are so many hungry folk in this world . Maybe one of the better things to come out of the present credit crunch is people realising either by reading this site, or watching t.v. programmes how easy it is to make your food go further and throw less away.

    Interesting little article:

    Throwaway Britain

The amount of food thrown away in Europe and the United States could feed the world three times over, and British households alone discard enough edible food to fill Wembley Stadium to the brim eight times a year. More than a quarter of it is still in its original packaging: that’s 5,500 chickens, 1.2m sausages, 4.4m apples and 5m potatoes each and every day. Oh, and 328,000 tonnes of perfectly edible bread a year.

with commercial kitchens there are health + safety rules as they are feeding the public - prepared food may only be kept for 48 hours and then must be thrown out if not used. No choice.

I very, very rarely throw out food - I don't have a car, so I tend to only buy stuff which is going to get used in the next few days anyway. It would break my heart to throw out food that I'd paid for and not used!
