15p out of every £ spent on food is thrown away....what a waste

Grrrr @ Freegans!
I work for the Co-op, and these people are a nightmare. I/ we aren't actually bothered about them taking whatever they like from the dump bin, but why do they have to throw what they don't want out the bin and leave it? If they had the common decency to put the unwanted food back in the bin we wouldn't mind. Instead it's down to us the shop workers to then go round picking up rancid food which the rats and pigeons have since been at.0 -
my friend would agree with poster who gets fed up with the mess they make round the bins at the back of the bakery she works at...have it if u want but dont chuck itall over the place so the staff have to clean it up.....as for wasting food we try really hard now not to waste stuff and use up leftoversonwards and upwards0

I know a lady with a smallholding and she does get gone off fruit and veg for her pigs mainly from stallholders at the market I believe. Its a great way of recycling.
I think that fresh unpackaged fruit and veg and restaurants throwing out scrap should be made to compost rather than landfill.
I actually heard an ex Macdonalds employee talking on radio 2 a few weeks back about how she was so shocked and when she got to management and got to lock up, she used to give leftovers from that day to the homeless. It was against the rules and she was jeopardising her job but I think rules about these things are silly and should be changed even if its only for waste management reasons.0 -
A friend of mine worked for M&S & any food going out of date is sold off to the employees on the cheap & any leftover is given to local homeless charities.Mind you that was in the mid 90's so maybe it's changed now.0

Didn't thrown out food like that go to pig swill in the past? Are there any moves afoot to bring that back?Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Seriously you aren't supposed to feed chickens anything but chicken feed, does that go for rabbits and guineas too?0

I have regularly thrown away food in the past
but since moving to OS, this has greatly reduced. I still haven't reached 100% but it's much better than earlier

Nothing gets binned in my house I bought it for a reason and that is to eat, and eat it I do.But I know lots of folk that do chuck stuff out, and I think its awful to think of food being wasted0
