If you want to use up fruit quickly try having a chocolate fondue, melt some chocolate, prepare the fruit and dip in. I know that you have to buy the chocolate and it is not the healthiest of treats but my children love it and the fruit gets eaten.

To make the chocolate go further, and add some calcium, mix some evaporated milk in with the melted choc. Yummy!

QUick question - how long would you keep a rotisserrie chicken. My Asda had then reduced to 89p the other night so I bought 2 but we got sick of chicken after 2 nights! there were loads of then so I could've had a freezerful -can they freeze?
Did make some great stock with the carcasses tho

  • My lovely chap who comes by with his van of vegetables once a week gives me all of his bruised bananas (I happened to mention that I didn't mind bruised when he was hunting for good ones - I am the last on his round). I just mash them, stick them into 600g weight bags (perfect for two banana loaves a la Nigella) and stick them in the freezer. I also mix the mashed bananas with natural yoghurt (lidl, obviously!), freeze that and the wee-ones think they are getting banana icecream. A very indulgent trick with the non-bruised bits is to cut them into chunks, dip half into melted chocolate and freeze on grease-proof paper - tastes far more decadent than it costs!!
Any other ideas would be very gratefully received!

I would certainly freeze them - maybe strip off the meat and freeze that separately from the carcass - then you can make stock when you want to and use the chicken in pies/sandwiches, etc? I normally walk straight past that bit - not any more!!

We hardly ever throw things away now. I made banana bread last night with 4 over-ripe bananas and any other fruit that needs using I make fruit martinis with!

If this works it shows you the bokashi composter I have in my kitchen.
You can put everything in it, cooked meat, cheese, fish, anything (except teabags.. lol, too much water in them but you can always add them to the big composter bin) You just fill it up, leave it 2 weeks and add it to the garden. You need 2 so when you're waiting 2 weeks for the other one to do it's thing you start filling the spare up.

My Bokashi bins arrived today! There are two bins, two lids, two taps, one 'pusher', and one orange grille which looks as though it should go in the bottom of the bin. There are no instructions  Does this grille go in the botom of the bin please bexbex? If so, surely there should be a second one to go in the bottom of the second bin, but they have only sent me one  I suppose it could go on the top of the bin contents, but it looks like it's meant to go underneath. I'm confused, please help :o

Newleaf. Hi, My Bokashi composter has arrived today, so excited. I think that the grill thing goes into the bottom of the container, thats the only place where it could fit and also it lets the liquid drain into the bottom of the container. You have probably worked all that out by now. Just thought that it might be helpful for future users. I didn't get a pusher. The leaflet said that you should use a plate or pot to push the stuff down with. The thing that made me smile was that things you should not include in the Bokashi are bottles, cans, plastic, glass, Aluminium metal. Other things not to include are Tobacco Ash Teabags and pet waste. I can't understand why we cannot put Teabags in, i know that they say that teabags are too wet. We squeeze ours out so they are nearly dry, so will include them and see what happens. Any way how are you getting on with your composter?

  • Morning!
Totally of topic- but i got 'Economy Gastronomy' book out of libary yesterday..Having a good old read and came across something that really shocked me. Its to do with waste etc, so i suppose it is moneysaving( have saved everything since joining here by way- am ashamed to say we did throw some bits out before:o)
Anyway this is wot we as a country throw out every DAY(based on last yrs figures i think) Sit down and prepare to be shocked:D

7 million slices of bread (worth £140 million per yr)
1 million slices of ham (worth £30 million per yr)
4.4 million whole apples ( worth £300 million per yr)
    440,000 ready meals
5.1 million whole potatoes (worth £140 million per yr)
660,000 eggs (worth £50 million per yr)
260,000 unopened pkts cheese ( worth £40 million per yr)
2.8 million tomatoes ( worth £80 million per yr)
1 million plums ( worth £70 million per yr)
1.2 million whole sausages (worth £60 million per yr)
550,000 bacon rashers (Worth £50 million per yr)
330, 000 chicken portions ( worth £70 million per yr)
82,000 whole cakes & gateaux ( worth £20 million per yr)
300,000 unopened packets of crisps ( worth £20 million per yr)
700,00 unopened chocs & sweets ( worth £40 million per yr)
2,900 unopened bottles/cans lager ( worth just under £10 per yr)

I dnt know if thats passed date food, leftovers, just unwanted(prob a mixture)
I tried to work out the prices all together for the year but it got into silly money v. quickly so i gave up..
It does say though that it was 1 million TONNES of food(that hadnt even been touched) last year that got thrown away.

So was just wondering what u all thought about that?
