I used to have AVG Free Edition but changed to Avast Free Edition which has a few things which AVG doesn't, one of them being anti spyware protection. Avast has a few other things which AVG Free Edition doesn't have. Go to http:https://www.download.com and search for free anti virus and compare what each offers.

AVOID Norton like the plague, I bought a laptop back in 2006 which had the free edition pre installed, it blocked every website I wanted to go on including genuine ones which I knew to be safe. I had to go into the settings to allow each website I wanted access to. Luckily I'm registered with the the Thorn Tree forums (Lonely Planet's forums) so asked for advice on there and AVG was suggested.

I use Quick Heal total security with its trial version. I use it for its efficiency. For free version to use for longer period, AVG, AVAST are there which timely DB update. For quick heal you need to update its DB and re-install after the time period finish.

Microsoft Security Essentials has kept three laptops and a pc virus free in our house for the last two years with the help of an occasional Maladware Bytes scan-- all free.

This is really interesting as I'm looking for some internet security software for my new laptop.

I used McAfee which came free with my ISP but ended up with an infected PC on 3 seperate occassions. Might try Avast.
