Will Aldi strawberries fruit this year?

Hi all

Long time lurker and garden lover here :D

Quick question for all of you experts on this forum. I have 3 hanging baskets with strawberries in that I have had for 3 years, I meant to replace the plants earlier in the year as I know after that sort of time they 'wear out' and don't fruit so well but being busy with my 8 month old I totally forgot - I also meant to take runners off them last year but pregnancy scrambled my brain so I didn't do that either :o

I see that Aldi are getting in some strawberry plants this Thursday so I want to know if I plant them straight away will I get fruit this year or do I have to wait until next year (it doesn't mention what type of strawberries they are). I have a rather pitiful crop at the moment so if the Aldi ones won't fruit this year then I'll probably just pot some runners off my existing plants to use next year and suck up not having many strawberries this year. I'd love to get some though as my little boy has been weaned and I'd really like his first taste of strawberries to be ones from the garden.

Hope you guys can help me out on this one.

Right - back to lurking on MBE's thread - I may even post one day :rotfl:

Hi, I bought some of the Aldi strawberries the last time they had them which was about 2 or 3 months ago, I think, & some of those are flowering & setting fruit. I don't know about plants which are only going to be planted out now. It's probably worth a go & if they don't fruit this year, they should be good next year. Someone once told me that if you cut all the flowers off the first year, & don't let them fruit, you get a bigger better crop from the next year onwards, though I've never done it (I like strawberries too much!) so can't say whether it works. The Aldi strawbs were only about £2.99 for 6 from what I remember paying & they have grown into lovely strong plants, better than more expensive ones i've bought from catalogues & garden centres in past years.

Thanks Foxgloves - yes for £2.99 I suppose it's worth a go even if it just means I have new plants for next year :)
  • You might get a few off this year, but you'll be in a cracking position for a bumper crop next year.

you will only get strawberries this year if they have flowers/set fruit already on them

however, if you want productive plants, its best not to let them fruit in their first year of planting, so id remove any flowers/fruit

personally, i dont stick by the 3yrs rule. ive had my plants for about 6yrs now, and this year ive had the biggest crop ever.

The aldi ones are very unlikely to be a good variety, search for our strawberry thread on pages 2 or 3 and order online.

you will get bare runners which wont crop this year, but will fill you with joy in the years to come

Ok thanks I'll have a look at the thread.....wanders off to spend all day pondering which strawberry type to get :rotfl:

Interesting to hear others have kept plants successfully for 6 years! I'm guessing they are in a permanent bed though as opposed to a basket?

When I bought my Aldi strawbs, there were 2 or 3 different varieties to choose from. I bought 'Elsanta' which while not my favourite ever variety are perfectly nice to eat. I can't rememebr what the other varieties were. Plants are growing massively strongly though, so very good value.

I bought some today - not the Elsanta as I've heard they are very mediocre tasting, but the Fragoo everbearer dark rose - was attracted by their dark pink flowers so am hoping for at least some this year, even though it's late. Off to find a planter now :).

    Hi

I got a tray of 6 strawberry plants for £2 from B & Q in the sale today. They had a couple of ripe strawberries on them which were sweet and delicious !
