Photo for charity website

Options
I'm currently putting together a simple website for the small charity I work for and need a photo /picture to appear as a header on every page. Unfortunately, we have very little money :( so i can't pay a lot out for one. I've checked out some of the shareware sites but there's nothing suitable.

Can anyone recommend sites that sell good photos at reasonable prices?

Thanks.

Is this one you tried, they have royalty free and paid for

    http://www.istockphoto.com/

You could post an outline of what you want to see if anyone already has something or would take the image and send it to you

do you have/know anybody with a good camera that could take a photo for you? It would be far better to use your own, or just use a coloured bar to give continuity. You may find a student willing to design a header for you for very little as part of a course?
There are plenty of websites available that will sell you photos, and most will do a cheaper rate for charities, but it would be far cheaper to take your own pic!!

What would you need the pic to be of?

It's a small counselling charity - we provide counselling for those on low incomes, so the header has to be something soothing, calm, etc. A lot of the photos I'm seeing look more like they're for a spa or beauty salon! Got to be really careful not to use any imagery that could have a negative meaning if someone if seeking help.

That's part of my problem (apart from lack of money) is that I'm not really sure what I'm looking for - hope that I'll know it when I see it !

Good idea to think about alternatives though ...:)

If you want something to be at the head of every page, does the charity have a logo you could use? Is there is a body (local council etc.) who provides a significant amount of funding and/or support? Maybe you can use their logo, or at least contact them and see if they can help out.
Maybe a combination of existing logos for bodies that support you. A lot of charities rely on volunteers for support - ask around and see if any of the existing staff know someone who can come up with a few designs for you to consider.

Just be aware Royalty Free is not the same as Free - it usually means you just pay once (and not an ongoing royalty). Just to clear that up, it catches people out sometimes.

No, we don't have a logo - it's on the TO DO list. All staff bar one (who gets paid just one day a week) are volunteers. We've lost most of our funding due to various cutback (including from the NHS - even though 50% of our clients come via their GPs !!)

That's a good idea about finding someone who can design something for us. Will start asking around. Thank you :)

  • Have a look on Flickr. Find some pics you could use and send messages to the photographers explaining your position and asking for permission to use their picture (tell them you'll credit them on the site, maybe offer to link back to their site if they have one).

I'd bet on one of the first you ask giving it for free.

Surely you need a logo before a website?? I've volunteered for a small charity where not one person got paid, but the first thing we did was have a logo designed. Think it happened before the charity was even registered!!
