Car Buying Scam?

I advertised my car for sale on a well known car selling site. The advert expired at the weekend. On Sunday evening I got a text message from GBCarBuyers.com offering me a reasonable price for my car and inviting me to go online and contact them.:)

I did this, filled in a form and was told that a valuation would be sent by email.

This morning the valuation had arrived. I clicked on the link and it took me to the site where I was invited to send £50 via a Kash PP voucher. It gave me the places locally where I could buy one of these vouchers.

The £50 was a returnable fee for the buyer to send their collection team to pick the car up, pay me cash for the car and return the fee.

Alarm bells rang but I decided to give it a try. When I went to the local Kash voucher place, a garage, they told me they only took cash for these vouchers as they were nearly all scams. I decided not to buy.

I went home and looked at the site again and found the "contact" page. The 0870 number is not connected! The Google map is a photo image and the email links did not link! I looked at the page code and saw that it had been created in an amateur web creation software.

I think this is probably a scam too but could not find anything on line elsewhere to indicate this.

Just to let everyone know and to beware this if they get similar text messages.

Yes it is a scam. Anyone who asks for payment by cash vouchers/Western Union etc. in a situation such as you describe will be fronting a scam.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • I was also offered a high price for my vehicle but was unable to contact them so I too believe this to be an elaborate scam. People should stay clear of this site as the temptation of accepting an unrealistic price for your car, (I mean, would any site offer you THREE times the price that other sites are offering??), will only result in you losing £50.

It's not that elaborate is it?

We'd like to buy your car, you need to pay us in advance though....

Walks like a duck etc etc etc.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
  • I do wonder sometimes....
Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Funny this thread has come up today, as there was a piece about Ukash PayPoint scams on BBC1 this morning.
  • I got a txt aswell aswell after putting my car on auto trader. When u ring the contact number provided no one even answerd which is dodgey straight away, especially when there's no voicmail to leave a message. I think its a scam. After booking an appointment they ask you to pay 50 pounds before someone will come out. No thanx.
Iv also had someone yet to scam me when I pit my car on gumtree. They were going to transfer cash to me through pay pal but had Indies with couriers collection so needed to transfer 600 to me n mentioned western union coins aswell. all i want to do is sell my car lol x

    One born every minute......
  • I researched this and gbcarbuyer is definitely a scam, this site is now down but they have created another on called, gbautobuyer.com, beware !!!

There are some genuine sites like this that do buy your car, only deal with the ones that have their address on the site and phone number that works. Also at the bottom of the page they should have company registration info.

You will find the genuine ones don't ask for money from you, they have no fees or charges.
  • This scam is now being operated as gbautobuyer.com with the same system......
