    Thanks for the replies.

Going for the cable tie route in the first instance as I have plenty of them.

    A stupid one.

I would go for a thinish chain. Can't be cut with something you could easily carry around with you.

Someone with a lovely garden? Our local vicar saw a woman stealing the newly planted plants from the church grounds, found out who she was and paid her a conscience visit - said she had a lovely garden full of plants - I bet she did!

I passed another church one day and saw a woman I vaguely knew from work - stopped for a chat as she and her husband were was digging in the beds with hand trowels, congratulated them on always keeping the beds so nice ... found out afterwards that they were stealing the church flowers!

I planted out geraniums outside my flat one day, went indoors to get water for them came out and they'd all been taken - nice area...just not nice neighbours.

I bet the gardens of hell will look really beautiful once this lot get there

Somebody I know (and neighbours) were losing hanging baskets on a regular basis - they were being sold at a local car-boot stall!

Maybe someone with same IQ as these?

Thieves hobble off with 70lb of meat in late-night raid

It seems not all gardeners are honest & decent, over the bank holiday weekend we went to Hillier Gardens at Romsey

Appalled to see a notice about CCTV installed & monitoring a plant bed due to theft, words failed us

Get a couple of cheap rape alarms, wrap the alarms in plastic bag to protect them from the weather, tape them inside the planter, and intertwine the cord with the chain, if someone tries to remove the baskets they will be in for a suprise.

Our local launderette had washing baskets with "stolen from Kenton launderette" on the bottom - maybe need to do that with the baskets!

I recall the late great Christopher Lloyd being sad about a seedhead that was stolen from Gt Dixter by a visitor - it was unripe, and the only one, so would be no use to the thief as it had to stay on the plant to ripen, so nobody won
