Apparently there are a sizeable number of people in the current recession, who are actually living in their cars. What address would they put down ?
That's my worst case scenario .... if by 4pm I've nowhere to sleep on any one night I'll be popping into Argos for a pop up tent then onto a camp site that night :)

    I do hope that doesn't happen .... not a camper :)

I have not come across this problem, but I guess there must be some way around this, given that Insurance is compulsory. I know some brokers offer a walkabout type of policy, which is really aimed at backpackers, who buy a vehicle to drive around to different places and includes cover in Europe as well.
Walkabout - I guess I'll need a hat with corks too then :)

I am moving to a new area, with a few quid in my pocket - and don't want to pay out nearly £10k in rent advances on a place I've never seen.... so I have to arrive, then start looking. And as I've no start date, but it'll be in the next 2 weeks probably, and it's summer season and prices are rising daily on caravans .... I can't just book places until the last minute, by which time B&Bs might only be able to offer me 2-3 nights in a row, or I might be out of my budget and unable to stay more than 2-3 nights just to give me more time to keep looking.

And, I plan to have a "holiday" in the middle of all this, for 2-4 weeks' duration, elsewhere.

Tell me that you've never wanted to just take off... wind in your hair .... seasalt up your nostrils.... well, this is how you do it :)

The usual compromise is to use a parents, (or childrens) address
Neither of those apply.... but the address I'll be using is a sibling.

Herts Insurance, who I think are now part of Adrian Flux group, did have a walkabout type of policy, where there is no usual address where the car will be kept. But I would think such a policy would come at a price.
I'm only just 2-3 months into a pricey Norwich Union policy .... don't mind paying, hate to be ripped off.

    :)

    I'll google HI/AFG.

Yes don't we all. I love Cornwall and would live there if there were plenty of jobs. Trouble with Cornwall, is that it is also really expensive to either buy or rent. Most normal jobs just would not pay enough to afford the house or rent.

Have you thought about getting a boat ? Keep moving, so that you don't have to pay mooring fees !

And that's why I'm leaving there and going East some 200 miles or so .... for a bit of better luck.... but 200 miles east is even MORE expensive :)

I am too fearful and pathetic for that :)

I'd do it with somebody else, if they were taking the full responsibility of moving/doing it :)

Build a tree house in a forest somewhere and people will call you the new 'swampy'.

  • re: the tent comment.

Try freecycle for a decent tent. Pop tents are useless in rain/wind.

Use your siblings address. A three month holiday is fine. Just change your current policy to the new address and go.

The Addess you use does not have to be where you live, only where you can be contacted. I use a PO Box address, but I do have to provide an address where the vehicle is usually parked.

The other downside is each time you change anything, you may get hit with a fee every time you update it - check if they do.

Lastly, someone of no fixed abode does not fit established risk profiles, if this is disclosed (as it surely must?) the cost of cover will be greater.

If/when I want/need one it'll be with 2 hours' notice.... freecycle is useless unless you're in an area where there's a good one - and you've time to sit allll day, every day, waiting for something good to come up.

And I can't get one in advance as I don't have room for it in the car just in case I might use it... not that freecycle's any good where I live anyway. Also - it's "just me" - and I stand a small chance of getting a pop up tent up/down again... not so a 'proper tent', alone, probably in the rain/wind and dark.
