Car Insurance - What Address to Use When You Have No Address

I'll be changing my address for all purposes shortly, but was wondering about what address to give for car insurance. The address for everything else is fine... but what about car insurance as quotes etc are based on your address and where the car is parked... and it'll be 200 miles from the address in all sorts of random addresses.

Or is it OK to register at an address, where you're not on the electoral roll and don't actually live, then just say you were on holiday if you need to make a claim?

Just trying to do the right thing, but have no clue what the right thing is.

Cheers

Why will the car be at random addresses 200 miles away? If for instance, you are a travlling salesman, you need to put down the address where you usually live and make sure you disclose in the application the point about the car being all over the place.

You probably need to consult a broker rather than trying to do this online as it doesn't fit the normal criteria.
  • You need to consult the insures and ask them.

It should be the address where your PERSON resides, that is where the letters with your name in capitals gets sent, that is your PERSON, that is your address.
You can live anywhere as you are a human, but your PERSON resides at the address.
    Its complicated old sea law.
But basically were your letters and bills get sent.

Sea law? Not helpful for car insurance, which should be the address the car is kept at, or addresses if there are going to be several for the insurance purposes. A correspondence address can also be used.

Apparently there are a sizeable number of people in the current recession, who are actually living in their cars. What address would they put down ?

I have not come across this problem, but I guess there must be some way around this, given that Insurance is compulsory. I know some brokers offer a walkabout type of policy, which is really aimed at backpackers, who buy a vehicle to drive around to different places and includes cover in Europe as well.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Not many ways around it. I can think of motorhome policies, and there are not even a handful that offer insurance to anyone without a home address, maybe not even they do now. The usual compromise is to use a parents, (or childrens) address, as the insurer accept if you travel in your motorhome full time, when you do come back you'll see your next of kin.

Herts Insurance, who I think are now part of Adrian Flux group, did have a walkabout type of policy, where there is no usual address where the car will be kept. But I would think such a policy would come at a price.

I will be "no fixed abode" - I have no home, nowhere I usually live. I will be staying on a variety of sofas, in a few cheap B&Bs, maybe a caravan here and there.... for up to 3 months, while I look for somewhere to live.... and it could take awhile to find somewhere.... or I might be lucky after 2-3 weeks.

Ah, that clears it up then. I'll be using a relative's address to receive/hold all my mail etc ... and for HMRC, banking stuff - and everything. Meanwhile, little me will be cruising around looking for somewhere to live. So not "travelling", just "temporary homeless/checking out a new area"

    Oh, there goes that theory.

Addresses have the potential to change every 2-3 days, or 2-3 weeks... for an unknown amount of time.
