I'm not saying I should have been paid for not turning up, but in some cases when it is a genuine mistake maybe the money should not be stopped and it should be looked into properly why someone hasn't attended an appointment. Each case should be looked at individually.

When you look at the bigger picture it's the genuine people who want a job that get penalized for a small mistake, yet there are people that sign on for the best part of what should be a working life with no intention of ever getting a job and not fulfilling their Job Seekers Agreement yet still get paid.

It's not 'harsh' though is it! If I don't turn up to work, I don't get paid.

So if people signing on don't bother turning up, then they shouldn't get paid either!

    Simple really.

And how much time would it take and cost for each `mistake' to be looked into?

Horse crap, you dont turn up to work you dont get paid. Same should be applied here. Only difference is you have to turn upto work maybe 5 days a week, here its once every 14 days!!

Blimey, some of you are really harsh and cruel!

The OP said her OH rang the JC to see when his sign on time was, and it was an hour before he rang, so he went down to sign on and they still sanctioned him.

It's a bit OTT if they sanctioned him for being an hour or so late.

It's my understanding that if you're sanctioned, your HB and CT benefits will stop too.

I'm not sure about tax credits, but I wouldn't have thought so.

I don't think they OP needs English lessons. She's posted for help, not sarcastic remarks that provide no help whatsoever.

As for both of them not working, nobody here knows why that is, so why have a pop at the OP for that?

Talk about kicking someone while they're down for God's sake!

Yet again some of you are being so judgemental against those unfortunate enough to be on benefits. Despite what the government says and certain newspapers, there are people on benefits for genuine reasons. If you actually asked them the truth, you'd find that the majority would rather be working. it's better chance of employment for at least one of us which has made my husband & i decide to move to Norfolk, where I grew up and my family still lives there. We have twin girls who'll be 7 weeks away from their 3rd birthday when we move.

To OP: Definitely appeal the sanction as being sanctioned for 2 weeks for being 1 hour late is a little unfair. Get all the evidence you can to explain why you were late.

Regarding Housing Benefit, there's 2 ways to get it, one being if you're on means tested benefits but the other is if you're working but on a low income, it'd be worth you going to your housing office and asking if you can claim for the sanction period under the low income rules.

Child Tax Credits and Child Benefit won't stop either, you've been given wrong information there.

In your situation I'd think about bypassing jobcentre and housing and go to Citizens Advice Bureau.

For baby milk, are you getting Healthy Start Vouchers which you're entitled to due to being on JSA. Google Healthy Start, the vouchers are sent out every 4 weeks. Each voucher is worth £3.10 and you're entitled to 2 each week (get sent 8 at a time) until child's first birthday, after that it's one voucher per week until child is 4. Vouchers can be used to buy fruit & veg when you start weaning.

Let us know how you get on.

Is the reason he forgot to go because he couldn't remember the appointment?

Why did he phone up and hour after the appointment? Was it to apply for a job?

Any appeal will be unsuccessful if the reason is simply he forgot.

Are you both applying for jobs? With the Olympics round the corner there are thousands of jobs available.

If it happens again within 12 months, you will be sanctioned for 4 weeks, if it happens again within 12 months of that 4 week sanction, you will be sanctioned for 26 weeks.

The first attribute employers are looking for is reliability. If someone can't even be organise to just make sure they attend one meeting every 2 weeks on time, how are they ever going to get a job?

Why always blame others and refuse to take responsibilities? Why do so many people believe that if the mistake they made were not intended, just a case of 'I forgot/I couldn't be bothered/I didn't realise etc...' that it should forgive the outcome? Life is about taking responsibility and facing the consequences of not doing so.

OP, you/your partner made a mistake, you acknowledge it. Learn from it, work out together a system so that this doesn't happen again, and in the meantime, accept the consequences. No it isn't unfair, if there were no consequences, no one would learn, no one would take responsibility and no one would have the skills to carry out work duties. This is NOTHING compared to what would be expected in employment.

Are these jobs all over the country because I've not seen any in my area.

Their are honest, genuine people looking for work who want to work and it's those people are was referring to. Not those that sign on for life without any intention of ever finding a job.

So please don't judge me the same as everyone else. You don't know why I'm unemployed or anything about me.

And as for the cost it would take to look into each case, you should see how much money is wasted in these places with paperwork, so called training courses and more staff then is needed.
