I suspect you can get a much better spec at the same price or less off ebay

Yes, with no promise it will work and no guarantee. My sister is going to get one. So pleased for her!
  • If it helps people get online... I believe you buy a better spec on amazon for £300.
I agree about crappy specs but if they are out of the box internet ready and one only has to do the minimum then good deal but add in photo galleries, mp3's etc and then the spec deficiencies start to show once the newbies get into it.

This thread reminded me of a topic I had to research and present at A-level called the digital divide. Its where the gap between people with or without a computer is linked to the age, location and mostly the amount of dispoable income someone has. Good luck to anyone who has a friend or family member unsure about the horrors the 'net can bring, and help them to take the plunge into being seconds away from recipes(I rememver the net in the early days) communicating with family and even games etc.

The PC matches the spec of my current set up .... and I've been using my PC for 6 years now and all my income's made online, so I am online virtually 24/7 (on a dongle too).... so not necessarily a piece of junk for everybody.

My stuff works for me ..... others will find it equally suitable.

The unattractive part of this deal is the 30 day warranty. Getting non-PC owners online is great but what do they do when it breaks down after 30 days and they end up ripped off by a local PC fixer who says its rubbish buy another or repairs at exorbitant cost?

At the least they should offer a 6 month warranty. If the kit is reasonable that shouldn't be too onerous.

Thanks for taking the time to post OP:beer:

I'm sure that folks on here that see the post, will inform non pc owners that would benefit.

    Nice one:T

That's not very encouraging to a newbie who has taken time to post for the benefit of others, surely?

With no warranty, start up help, probably no legal OS plus delivery charges. Ok some of you might say these are crap but rather than belittle why not y'know do something contructive and come up with the better offer for people on low incomes??

However I would encourage anyone to try and save up the pennies as much as possible and go visit your local PC builder/shop you will get much better advice, backup and support than at the big boys - If one muppet comes on here after this post and starts banging on about spotty teenagers etc I will SCREAM.

Oh and for cheap LEGAL software don't forget if you are attending a course or if you have school age children then you can buy from here

    http://software4students.co.uk/

    and save a packet!!

PS don't buy a copy of Office 2010 student and teacher version as it doesn't contain Publisher or Access which they will need if they're at secondary school, buy Office 2010 Professional Plus which currently £69 on that site but is often £39-49 so keep an eye on it! (yes I know you can use the free alternatives but if you're using MS at school i'd recommend buying it for them at home as well, the number of times I have had to help a student convert their work from something like Ability office that they've done at home into something MS Word etc will read.......)
