All irrational fears should be faced up to and dealt with. It's not that hard. (And before you flame me, I've done it.)

I think you'll find 99.9% of dogs don't bother 99.9% of people, it's the people that make a fuss that have issues.

    HBS x

I'd agree with that. It's practical advice and, as you say, most dogs are fine. It's just when you see the odd lager swigging yob with some ugly square looking 'weapon' dog, or some hippy with a giant snarling beast that can't understand why anybody else might be just a little apprehensive of it, or some old duffer that lets his alsation lay chalkers all over the pavement, that you just know those are the ones that ruin it for everyone else.

Quoting PART of my post makes no sense.

... and the ones that let their dogs on the beach and tell you to 'mind your own business' when you point out the sign.....and the ones that let their dog burst the kids ball and say 'he is only playing'......
unfortunately there are quite a few irresponsible owners out there.(not saying you are OP)

Alsatian if at all but a proper name is German Shepherd.

OK, let's quote the whole thing then:

    Sorry - but why not?

If I am scared of flying to the point that I will go abroad - I will deal with that fear. Same if I am scared of say spiders or whatever else...

Their fear - their responsibility to deal with it.

My answer to your question in the above is, "Because they have the right to go about their lives without being harassed by other people's out of control animals."

And do they have written on their forehead "I am scared of dogs" so the dog owners can see it and avoid them?

    No they do not.

So - it is their problem and they need to deal with it.

I do not agree that it is the responsibility of those who have a fear of dogs to address the issue.

As an owner of two dogs, who are currently sitting at my feet, I feel it is my responsibility to keep them away from people unless they are approached.

The point is, they don't need such a sign. They have an absolute right to go about their lives without being assaulted and harassed by other people's dogs. In exactly the same way people don't need to go around with a sign saying "I don't like being punched in the face", for example.

I do not let my dog approach random people either - that is not the point here.

The point is, if someone does have a genuine fear of ANYTHING - they need to deal with their own issues.

If every dog owner was like poppyoscar, virtually nobody would any good cause for complaint!
