UK Holiday on the cheap, help as to where?

I'm looking at a UK holiday, using public transport and hotels for 1 adult and 1 small child. I had hoped somewhere quaint and by seaside, but looked at Brighton- found cheap train tickets but hotels are extraordinarily expensive!
Any ideas for good places, within a mile or so of train station with lots to do? I've done Haven but want to use B&B or hotel. Thank you!!

Can you give some idea of your budget and when you're looking to go ?0

Hi thanks, around August-September and budget under £300 excluding spending, only inc travel and rooms

mid/late September (outside the school holidays) should be cheaper than August.
I forgot to ask where you will be travelling from ?
For cheap b & b's, I'd suggest the traditional seaside resorts like Blackpool etc, but I wouldn't describe them as 'quaint' !
('Quaint' and 'lots to do' is a difficult combination...)0 -

Assuming travel will cost £50 then I think you're going to struggle, sorry. Even good B&Bs charge upwards of £60 per night so you might get 4 nights on your budget.
But here's one suggestion. The Hanson Hotel in Broadstairs (great for kids). You can get Dinner, B&B for £230 for a week. No charge for children sharing the same room

No experience of this place, but my gut feel was more for Margate than Brighton (AKA Islington-on-Sea with prices to match) and I found this through the Visit Thanet website hereWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

If you avoid the Saturday night, then you should be able to get Travelodges for £20-£40 a night from Sunday to Friday in places like Blackpool Central or Scarborough.

Check the tips on the website as to how to get the best rates - you may have to book individual nights rather than make a single block booking (if you make sure you select the same room type throughout you won;t have to move)0 -
DFC could be onto something with Broadstairs- it's a very quaint little town. However, Margate itself is hideous. Ramsgate is nicer, and it's a lovely walk from Broadstairs to Ramsgate along the cliff tops or the beach, with a little park to stop off at on the way.0

Have you thought of going a coach trip?
We had our first ever one in the UK recently with shearings, 5 days 4 night half board in Scotland cost us £129 each, which I thought was very good value.
I am sure there are lots of other companies doing similar deals to the south coast.

Good advice this. National holidays do 5 day coachtrips to seaside and country locations for as little as £99 for 5 days.
Have a look at their website. They have last minute bargains too. If you sign upfor their newsletter they send you special offers through email and post.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
We've just had one night in the St Anne's Travelodge (new build, just opened) for an event in Blackpool. It's great, and so are St Anne's, Lytham and plenty of other nearby places. Blackpool's even ok for an hour or two :-)******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0

Completely agree with this, I actually live I Broadstairs, and love it - I am a single mum with a 2 year old, and there are always things to do with her, even if it's donning Welles and raincoats on the beach. Would avoid Margate , really not very nice and certainly not quaint!!!
Will have a little look around see if I can find any other deals for you if you are interested in this area0
