New York Hotel

I've got a feeling there will already be a thread on this, so feel free to point me in the right direction (though the New York thread is SO big I got lost in there!
)
We are going to NYC in September and need a hotel. Good position for the tourist tail as it is our first trip. We are just married so think we call this a honey moon. Something nice, but not terribly flash - unless of course it's a bargain. I'd love nice city views.
Any ideas?

Avoid the Waldorf Astoria. The time I stayed there I was disappointed with the rooms. It is overpriced, grubby and very dated.

The cocktail bar and entrance area are very grand but these are open to anyone to go in so you can stay elsewhere and go for cocktails or a drink in the bars and reception area.
The first time i went I stayed in the Amsterdam Court hotel which was very cheap and felt very NYC but quite dark, gloomy and didn't feel luxurious.

The gansevoort hotel is amazing. I have been in one of the top end suites in there and it is fab. Filled with celebs and sooo luxurious. Always first choice but very expensive.

I loved the Waldorf Astoria. How about Roomate Grace? We had the best time there.0

We went to Ny on the QM2 and thought lets do what they did in the 30's etc and stay at the Waldorf.
The public areas are ok but the room was not up to scratch, as already described it was grubby....they are selling on the name Im afraid.
The Marriot Times Sq is excellent....and in the centre of things too.0 -
I stayed in the Hampton Inn Times Square was really nice. It wasnt that cheap but we booked it with a flight on expedia and saved a LOT.
When people at my work used to travel there for business they stayed in Roomate Grace. I think the bathroom walls are like frosted glass or something though just to warn you - but as youre going with a partner and not a friend that would be ok!0 -

Agree this is a very good hotel. My dd is there at the moment and always visits their revolving restaurant when she is in NY. She has stayed the last few times at the Salisbury. She always books with virgin as she gets a discount with them but still check them out. Salisbury is near central park, opposite the russian tea rooms, ten minute walk from times square. We stayed at the metro on 34th st. It was ok but staff were a bit surly and there was loads of building work at the back of the hotel but that will probably be finished. That hotel is right next to empire state building. It is very central to everything.
I am sure you will have a fantastic time.0 -
My OH and I went to NY to celebrate being together for 20 years. We stayed at the Affinia 50 and it was fabulous. Close enough to everything, in a nice are near 5th Avenue and we got a free upgrade to a huge suite because we were celebrating an anniversary. It wasn't the cheapest but worth every penny. Link below. You'll have a fabulous time!

We stayed at the Renaissance which is slap bang in the middle of Times Square and we absolutely loved it. I don't think it was hugely expensive either, though this was 18 months ago. The room was much bigger than another hotel we stayed in on an earlier trip there, and it was more than comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and, although the bar was quite expensive, we'd definitely stay there again.
Have a fab time in NY!From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
Thanks All, lots to look into. I want to be in a good position close ot as much as possible from a tourist view point, though I'm wondering if right on Times Square is a little too in the middle?
So much choice! I want the fact that it's our honeymoon trip to get us an upgrade
