Samsung GS2 - Cheaper new than as upgrade

Options
Hello,

The 24 month contract on my hopeless Nokia is finally up, so I've been looking at available upgrades.

The O2 site itself has a pretty terrible range and I feel like I'd be overcharged on anything I get through that directly. I went on a few comparison sites and found a great deal on the Galaxy S2 - free at£15.50/month with unlimited texts and 100 minutes.

I called thinking they'd be able to give me a similar deal, but apparently I'd have to get a refurbished phone for them to match that. I asked what would happen if I purchased it directly through the website it was on but didn't really understand what the girl told me - it's Saturday evening and she clearly wasn't feeling her most helpful.

What's my best option to get that deal, cancel my current one and keep my number? I really don't understand why the upgrade deals are so bad - I've been an O2 customer for six years and assumed they gave some loyalty bonus.

No such thing as loyalty bonus, if you want to drop your pants for the providers then do so, the obvious choice is to port your number towards the deal that suits your financial and usage requirements.
  • I'm happy staying with O2 - they and Vodafone get the best coverage locally - I just wanted to know if the process of buying a new phone was different since I'm not changing network. I had hoped it would be a little easier.

It is easy, ya take the deal or leave it, what are Tesco offering on your chosen handset? They run on O2 remember.
  • I actually didn't know that, but they've nothing close to the O2 offer I found.

I guess I'll just take out that offer and move the number across. Seems silly O2 can't do it themselves when it's on their network either way.

Remember as the S3 becomes more available then there maybe offers on the S2 which suit your requirments, probably if you request your PAC code O2 may offer something unpublished, but don't hold up too much hope, after an 18 monthcontract with orange that was it for me and contracts, rather buy the handset outright and know my monthly airtime bill (as once the money for the handset is spent, it is spent).

Switch your current contract to PAYG after the min term is over.
Buy a new contract with O2 elsewhere.
Transfer the old number from PAYG to the new contract (port it our if it is another network).
    I think it's pretty easy.

BTW, Tesco Mobile use O2 network. Talkmobile use Vodafone.

£15.50 is obviously better than you'd get through a network directly. Swap to that deal if you'd prefer it but double check a few things before doing so... Check who is providing the handset and the levels of support they offer. Chances are it is not the operator supplying the phone but a third party company. It's best to ensure they are known and genuine. It's also handy to get any contact info you can. Also if you have any problems with the deal or the phone the operator will refer you to this company. If the deal involves any cash back Id check the method it is paid in case you have to send your bills off. These deals are great if you're prepared but can bite you if youre not it just helps to do a little homework when saving money. I must be stupid I always upgrade with my network... Just find it easier I guess.

I would definitely think it is better to wait for the S3 release! You will get better deals when the new phone is out on the market!

i got a good deal on the s2 as an upgrade with voda - so as people have said, leave if they won't play ball.

The s3 is out, the s2 is cheap as chips (if you know what i mean!) now.
