My engagement ring is white gold and I have had it about 2 years or thereabouts? It had started to wear slightly but I didn't actually realise till I bought my wedding ring (which was obviously brand new) and that showed up the difference.
I had the E-ring dipped so that it would match the wedding ring in the wedding pictures, but I actually prefer it with the more worn appearance! It looks too bright and shiny now. I get married in about a month and I plan on just leaving both rings to 'fade' together then I'll play it by ear.

Yeah - I quite like the colour the back of the band of mine is at the moment - you can see the yellow gold coming through but it's very subtle (I don't wear normal gold as it doesn't suit my skintone - but this does)... if my wedding ring would go to match I'd actually be quite a happy girlie.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
My husband's wedding ring is white gold and it's 26 years old now and still OK."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

My rings are 25 & 26 years old and were only replated when I had the setting changed on the engagement ring.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I'd never heard of white gold needing to be re-anything.

I think the thing that may decide it would be how often I need to get the white gold replated. The local jewllers charge £30 a go and recommend doing it 1-2 times a year. Do you really need to do it that often? The skeptic in me says they only say 1-2 times a year to make more money!loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.0

You don't need to get it replated at all. We got married 30 years ago and have never replated the rings. I think it would look wrong to have a bright shiny wedding ring after 30 years' marriage, they have character and wear, a bit like us.
Of course they don't need doing that often - I would not give any business to a jeweller that told me that nonsense.
Do you have a profession ? would you take very kindly to someone telling you your job ?
My husband is a jeweller, he frequently gets insulted by customers who rather rudely wont listen to his explanations of 'why' because they feel they know best.
If the OP asked the question "how often would it need to be re-plated" then the answer of 1-2 times a year would be a reasonable answer if the OP was expecting the ring to be in a perfect condition and still look shiny and unmarked as it was at the time of purchase. If the question was however "whats the longest I can get away with before it really has to be done" then 6 months is an unreasonable answer.
There are a lot of examples of how rings can last decades and not need re plating, I think that shows how things used to be made of quality long lasting materials though and if you were to compare them to todays mass manufactured disposable lifestyles you will see its like comparing classic cars and Citroens. Thats without taking into account the fact that one may sit in a garage untouched for weeks on end whilst the other is used as a rally car every weekend :cool:Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais0 -
My engagement ring is 9 yrs old and I've never had it replated. I do look after it though - I don't wear it in bed or in the shower and I always wear gloves for washing up.0
