having had to have an examination on my eyes this week that made vision impossible, I have come to the firm belief that there is no way on this planet would I allow anyone to perform laser eye surgery on me purely for cosmetic reasons.

Many moons ago when it first appeared on the scene I remember the scare stories about the ones that went wrong and thought that it wasn't worth it. Nowadays it sounds like they are better, but I still worry about possible issue either now or in the future (nothing is 100% safe). I'm not that bothered about glasses so I will stick with them.

AAAARRGGHHH!!! im trying sooo hard not google "laser eye surgery complications!!"
I like my glasses, think i'll tell the OH thanks but no thanks!!!He kinda wants me to have it done cos he had dental implants last year, so thinks i "deserve" something too. Will suggest he buys the kids more garden toys!
Will having dry eyes totally prevent me using contacts? I have astigmatism too and am sure they cost more? Lol, he can fund them instead!
Cheers for the advice, am well and truely put off!!! x

Laser surgery can cause dry eyes, so I am not surprised that they do not want to risk it with your Sjorgens.

Mr HB had laser surgery last year (he needed it to be able to carry on working as his uncorrected vision was no longer good enough) and he had to have one redone this year, but he is now delighted with the results.

We had consultations with 2 different companies - the first one said Mr HB would need the IOL, the second said that there was absolutely no reason why he should not have laser treatment. We went with the laser.

I have had it done 3 times due to complications and still can't see properly. I don't regret having it done as I can now see without glasses to the extent that I can function on a night out etc but need them and feel more secure wearing them for driving, reading, computer etc.

The first time i had it done, my eyes were undercorrected. Then one eye healed with a wrinkle in the cornea so it had to be redone and then I had my other eye redone and it was overcorrected.

It ended up feeling like a catalogue of errors but they admitted that it is not an exact science and there is often little idea prior to surgery how people will heal and therefore what the end result will be if you start with a high prescription. Mine were around -8 and -10 before treatment.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!
  • My OH had IOL and its worked amazingly. She recovered really quickly and now her eye sight is better than mine.

It was with Optical express, we had a discount code and they also took off extra money for having the appointment so soon after the consultation.
  • You really must be extremely careful about any laser eye surgery. Always ask your GP to refer you or to recommend how to find a reliable person to do it.

Do use the internet to look up reviews done by people who've had the surgery and what their experience was like and if there were any problems.

I've heard of people going almost blind from mistakes made so it's put me off for ever. I just could not cope with going blind so I'll stick with glasses, even though I hate them!

Is IOl the same as clear lens extraction? My optician recommended this to me, he said it's the same surgery that cataract patients have. I'm too scared to go through with it though.
