Well my laptop is back and working (£90 later)

I haven't managed to speak to them regarding the exact problem but here is the wording they have used on the invoice to fix the problem:

Extract hard drive perform CHKDSK to fix indexing issues
Replace hard drive, check windows error logs for issues
Error point towards processor being stepped down to low speed forcefully thru firmware.
Updated BIOS to latest version in attempt to remedy problem.
    Machine now works.

I am not exactly sure what the above means but I think I had a virus - I might ring them tomorrow to see if I should upgrade my security.

    Thanks to everyone who helped.

They updated your BIOS - something you could have done yourself with help here.

I read that as taking it out and putting it back again after running chkdsk - not replacing it as new.

Yes, I am not sure that they have done anything that I couldn't have done to fix the problem, but with it jamming all of the time I was struggling to run anything on it and I use it for work.

I don't think that I will use this company again though - although they were quick - their communication was a bit rubbish.

Insofar as it's possible to tell from the description the "professional" gave, this should've been dealt with under warranty as the machine is only a few months' old. You should've called Samsung or taken it back where you bought it.

It's easy to say that now but the OP said it was working fine but recently was crashing.

Yes, the BIOS issue should have been rectified under warranty but the OP said they couldn't run system restore in safe mode & that's usually an indication of a virus.

Yes I think that you are probably right, but assumed it was a virus and thought I would try them first - I didn't really want it being sent of somewhere to not get back for ages or being told it was a software problem and not their fault.

I spoke to the pc guy today and he said that it was an incompatable driver - so he had updated them. He said I could have took it back to PC world but they might not have been able to fix it.

I asked if I could update them if it happened again and he said it was complicated but maybe. So I am hoping it doesn't - not sure why it would happen so quickly and why its not a wide spread problem if it happenend to mine.

    Thanks for everyones comments.
